        Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on checking my (very wriggly!) Netherland Dwarf’s back end.
I’ve watched quite a few YouTube videos of people checking this area on a rabbit but when I try to get Dobby into a similar position, he kicks a lot and tries to get away. I’m really worried he’s going to hurt himself if I keep trying, but it seems like something I need to be able to check, particularly with the warmer weather starting.

I don’t have any reason to believe he’s having problems with any sticky poos right now but I’d like to be able to keep an eye on the area to make sure fly strike doesn’t become an issue.

If anyone has any advice on getting a look at his back end and what exactly I need to be watching out for, I’d really appreciate it. I’m a new bunny parent, so I’m still learning!

With my Bindi, I used to get my husband to hold him, like baby burping style, and I would just lift up his bum a bit and take a peek. I needed to trim dirty bum hair sometimes. Also used this method for all my buns nail trimming.

I just reach under there and feel! LOL Boy, do I get some surprised looks from my buns. It’s priceless!

Thanks so much, I’ve just tried this and think I had some success!
Sorry to be a little graphic/TMI but if there was any poo sticking to his bum or any sign of flystrike, would it be very obvious?
I’m not sure what it should feel/look like under there or if I need to be separating his fur to check there too? When I lifted his tail this evening, I could see a little pink/red nub and everything else was white – I’m guessing the little nub is his anus?

Sorry again to be a bit graphic – I’ve never done this before and I’d just like to make sure I’m doing it right!

I do the “drive-by” feel (similar to LBJ!). It should feel soft and fluffy under there. If you feel anything unusual or crusty, resort to Plan B. Have someone else hold bunny with his back against their tummy, with bun’s rear end slightly curved outward while you hold bunny’s back feet to prevent kicking. I even prop the bun’s feet against one of my arms if I need to do any minor cleaning down there. If I could remember how to upload a pic I could show you!
