        Hi everyone,
I adopted my 13 month old rabbit 2.5 weeks ago from a shelter. 10 days ago she frantically started nesting, built a beautiful nest and even pulled a fair amount of fur to line it. However since this she hasn’t really done it again. She has occasionally moved a few strands of straw but not like she was. She is eating normally and doesn’t seem very aggressive apart from moving to the other side of the cage when I go to pick her up.
However in the last few days I have caught her lying on her side a few times which I haven’t seen her do before and when I got her out I tried to palpatate her stomach gently and it does feel like she has some lumps in their, although im not sure if I’m just feeling her organs? Since yesterday she has also started slightly lactating. I don’t want to mess with her to much incase she is pregnant so I just felt her tummy the once. I have no idea if she was around any males or not and when I call them they can’t seem to tell me 100% as they get let out sometimes and she said they could have sexed a bunny wrong potentially!
So my question is, if it’s a real pregnancy would she have had her babies by now seeing as she nested 10 days ago??! And would she produce milk if she wasn’t pregnant? I’ve put her a nest box in just incase and keeping a close eye but I’m slightly confused with her symptoms and now the lactating!
Any options would be greatly appreciated!

If she was from a shelter shouldn’t they have spayed her?

No not necessarily here. You can take them back to get spayed at a later date if wished

If she’s not spayed, it could be a false pregnancy due to hormones. But keep a close eye, just incase she actually is pregnant.

False pregnancies can lead to lactation. The body “believes” its pregnant and all the pregnancy hormones are there, there are just no babies. A pseudo pregnancy always resolves on its own but can reoccur again and again. A doe that gets frequent false pregnancies should be spayed, but then all girl buns should preferably spayed anyway to prevent uterine cancer.

It does sound like a false pregnancy because they as a rule nest very near the due date, like the day before. I think you’ll just have to wait and see. Let her have a nest box. If she pulls her own fur you don’t have to be worried, the pregnancy hormones make the hair loosen so it’s not painful when the buns pull it out.

                  Hi!
I would take her to the vet to get an ultrasound just to make sure. If she isn’t pregnant, then I would get her spayed as soon as possible, my female New Zealand would make nests when she wasn’t spayed.

Thankyou for all the advice, she will be getting spayed as soon as this pregnancy or false pregnancy is over. If she is still the same over the weekend I shall take her to the vet on Monday
