        Hello all

My female bun Leia is digging holes in our carpet :/

Only in 1 spot – its the entrance she uses to go under our bed.  Any ideas how I can deter her digging?  Hubby is threatening to take her back to the shelter and I don’t want to do that as she has bonded so nicely with our OG bunny Chewey.

Any suggestions would be most welcome

        xo

          Hi there
So all of my buns used to do this and it was annoying. It could be that:
          1. the carpet is so long that it looks like pellets to her and she wants to eat it so she digs as it
          2. It could also be that she has some dental issues and that she wants to dig to make her feel better.
          3. are there anyother animal scents that she is trying to dig out, maybe she doesn’t like another animal?
          4. Maybe she is just bored and digs out of boredom. I suggest getting some vinyl flooring or something hard to put over that spot that she can’t move and , then after awhile you can reintroduce her to the carpet and spray her when she starts to dig. I have cardboard boxes I make for my buns and they get their digging out that way since bunnies naturally dig to create their home. You can go to target or walmart and buy cheap cardboard boxes and cut holes in the sides and then put toys in there and they will love it.
          I hope that helps

I just dealt with this same issue this week. I rearranged the furniture in the living room and my bun found a nice new den space for herself under a stool type thing. It was only after a couple days that I noticed she was digging into the carpet there. She has a favourite blanket so I tried putting that into the space to protect the carpet, but it seemed to annoy her that I was redecorating and she threw the blanket out like ten times haha. Finally I pinned the blanket to the floor under the legs of the stool. She stopped digging in the same space and still hangs out there, just seems to have accepted that the blanket is part of that space now. She also has an alternative dig spot. We got her a cat bed a while ago and she flipped it over and tore a hole in the bottom so she could burrow into the lining of the bed. It’s tucked out of the way so it’s not an eyesore and having that tunneling/digging option seemed to satisfy her destructive urges.
I don’t know if either of those solutions would work with your setup but it helped us!

Ack! How do I delete a comment? My computer froze, and then unfroze and my comment was posted twice. Does that matter? Lol.

                  Thanks for the reply
I thinks it’s out of boredom or for attention.

My husband made a wooden box for them to chew and I have a cardboard box and various other toys for them.
So last night I found a tile in the garage and I have our that over the spot for now.
She’s relentless I tell u! Our boy is so lovely and placid

I meant to say earlier we had originally put carpet tiles where she was digging because it worked to deter our boy but she bloody ate them!
She’s just a real cow lol

We also just had another baby which I’m sure has put her out a bit.
I just don’t get why she’s acting out when they both have full access to a double story home!
At this stage I’m too scared to let her downstairs because she causes so much drama

I think the idea of possibly putting down a throw rug that is made of the sewn together cotton strips? They are found so many places now… I found mine at Walmart. They are cheap, destroyable and replaceable! Without doing damage to your carpet…

If it is for attention, then as you all get adjusted to the new baby, she will become more adjusted again as well… plus you will be able to possibly give her a little extra attention by then…

You could also scold her immediately when you catch her in the act of digging the rug apart and scout her out of that room for a time out! Especially instead of spraying her with water… this can significantly cause her to fear you. Instead when you scold her, rt during the act, and then give her a time out, she will begin to acquaint that punishment to her deed instead of just becoming fearful of you.

That’s a good idea…I’m from Australia so not sure where I would get something like that?
Do u have a picture of yours?
I have tried scolding her but she doesn’t care lol. She’s hardcore!
I’ve sprayed her maybe 3 times with water when I’ve caught her being districtive.
It’s hard to find the balance with a newborn but definately trying to give them both love and attention at some point everyday.

Of course ! Bunnies get so bored so fast and the cardboard boxes I make my buns last for a couple of weeks and then they are destroyed haha.
