On March 16, 2018 I decided to get my 9 year old rabbit Cookie a new friend. I saw a little white bunny with black spots and fell in love immediately. I brought him home and named him spot. Cookie and Spot bonded immediately and I was so happy that cookie finally had a friend. They groomed each other, slept together, and played in the yard together. Spot was the happiest little guy I’ve ever known. He would do one binky and be halfway across the yard. He was very round but most of his body mass was just his fluffy hair. On April 30 I woke up to a note from my mom saying that Spot wasn’t acting right and wasn’t moving around much. I brought him up to my room that morning to keep an eye on him. He was just sitting on the ground not moving when all of the sudden his head fell to the side and he went limp. My boyfriend and I rushed him to the vet but before we could get there things got worse. He way lying in my lap when all of the sudden he started screaming and went completely limp in my arms and I knew in that moment that he wasn’t coming back. The vet performed CPR and gave him epinephrine to no avail. I miss my baby every single day and it’s been very hard on me. Also I should mention that the day before all of this happened he was completely fine. The day his passed his droppings were kind of odd and his stomach was swollen. The vet said she saw no external signs and would only know what had happened with an autopsy.

I now feel so terrible for my other rabbit Cookie because he’s all alone again and I’m not sure if I should get him another friend. I’ve been spending extra time with him and giving him extra love but I’m afraid he’s going to miss having constant company from another rabbit. I would really appreciate some advice on how to help Cookie and whether it would be a good idea to get him another friend.

        Thanks

This is so sad bunnies are so delicate, poor cookie must be wondering what happened to spot, I would take time to get another bunny, and show cookie as much attention as possible, its awful shock I know, rip poor little spot, heartbreaking x

So sorry about Spot. They can and often do go suddenly after seeming just fine shortly before. And unfortunately the only way to try and find out what happened is to do an autopsy and even then it may not be conclusive. You tried to get him to the vet. I’m sorry he couldn’t hang on. I know how hard it is losing your precious little rabbit. My heart goes out to you.

You are doing the right thing by giving Cookie extra attention and extra love. Monitor his pooping, eating, and drinking to make sure that all remains consistent. His behavior may change somewhat do to Spot being gone and it may not. Everyone rabbit reacts differently. As to getting Cookie another companion, I haven’t had experience with bonded bunnies after a death of one of them. There a many members here who have. It may take some time for people to respond to your questions. If you feel you haven’t gotten adequate feedback regarding your questions after a few days, you may want to start another thread in the House Rabbit Q & A forum.

Again so sorry about little Spot. Thinking of you and Cookie.

So sorry for your loss. It sounds as if Cookie is quite easy to bond with and if you are asking us for us our advice as to whether to get another one, it’s possible that you’re already thinking about one, and I would say if you’re ready then go for it !

I’m so sorry to hear about Spot. Bunnies are such delicate creatures. I lost my Flakie in January due to problems with his stomach he was 10 and it was heartbreaking.

It must have been very upsetting for you at the vets. I was the same.
