› Forum › DIET & CARE › How often should I change my rabbit’s litter?
Hello everyone!
I’m new here but my name is Kiara. Nice to meet you all!
So I wanted to make a better living for my rabbit. I’ve had my rabbit, Oreo, for 2 years now. She has always had the best living but I also feel like she’s not getting the best of the best, if that makes sense.
1. Recently, I’ve been noticing that her litter has been smelling. I feel like it’s her litter / bedding that I use because it is different than what I was normally using (which still made the litter smell but not as bad). Could something be wrong? I also want to know what litter you guys recommend because I have seen many recommendations before like wood pellets but I’m super skeptical about it.
2. How often do you guys change your rabbit’s litter box? I typically change Oreo’s every other day (because of the smell). Is this the normal amount of times you should change your rabbit’s litter? I just feel like I have to buy litter / bedding every other week which is costing me a lot.
3. Another thing I want to ask is what type of veggies and fruits do you typically feed your rabbit(s)? Oreo loves loves loves cilantro and celery. I haven’t feed her any fruits because I always get scared to see how she’ll react to them. But I’ve given her variety of different kinds of veggies (besides parsley because she’s allergic).
4. How often do you guys feed your rabbits? I never had a specific time to feed Oreo because I feel like she eats 24/7. But I feed her in the morning and at night (replacing her pellets). She usually gets 2 cups of veggies in the morning with 1/4 cup of pellets and then at night, she also gets another 1/4 cup since I try to keep her well fed. She always had access to unlimited amount of hay (changed every day). Is this a good routine?
5. What are your rabbit’s favorite toys? Oreo never really likes toys. She has a wood hutch that she loves chewing on, instead of her chew sticks. I want to add more toys but I’m not sure what to get her. Any recommendations would be amazing!
What type of bedding are you using? I use the pelleted horse bedding from Tractor Supply as the bottom layer, then put aspen chips/bedding on top of that, then a ton of hay on top of that. In the big box I use (it’s actually a storage box, about 24 inches by 15 inches), I put thin layers of each and change it every other day. I also have a small corner litter box with wire on top and change it daily. If the smell has changed but you think it’s the new litter, it’s probably nothing to worry about, but if it’s not the litter, sometimes a rabbit can have health issues (like a UTI) that would cause a change in the smell. I know I watched a YouTube video by the House Rabbit Society where they said they put newspaper under the litter (on the bottom of the pan) so that they can tell if there’s a change in urine color, etc. As far as toys, I buy a lot of mine from Chewy or you could buy some here (from Binky Bunny store). My current bunny loves things that he can throw around or run through (like a willow tunnel). Again, I’ve read up on the House Rabbit Society and watched some of their YouTube videos for what’s safe. I answered your food questions on your other post.
I am currently using CareFresh but I really want to change it. I was actually switching between CareFresh and then a mix of CareFresh and aspen chips because I figured it’d help. I heard that wood pellets help so much but again, I’m skeptical. The smell has never changed, it has always smelt the same. It just has smelt a little stronger. If that makes sense. And Oreo will eat the newspaper which is why I don’t put newspaper anymore :/
Oreo loves loves loves her tunnel. I recently did get rid of it because she peed in it and it was not easy to clean. She also is a huge chewer so I feel like maybe chew toys would be best?
Hello and welcome to Binkybunny
1. I’m using wood pellets and I highly recommend it because of its ability to absorb and control smell. Are there any reasons why you are sceptical about it? As for why the smell has gotten stronger, there could be a number of reasons ranging from diet change (e.g a new vegetable that she’s eating) to health (e.g. an infection). Of course it could also be the litter change so it’ll be good if you could mention what you used previously vs what have you changed it to. Also, is she spayed?
2. The amount of times you change the litter really depends on how bad it smells, how full the box gets etc. Personally I change it everyday not because of the smell, but because it gets full. Buying the litter in bulk is usually cheaper and wood pellets are normally sold in bulk with an affordable price.
3. So far I’ve tried bok choy, coriander (cilantro) and baby romaine. I’m still experimenting so I will increase the variety as it goes. Fruits wise I’ve fed grapes (without the seeds and skin). Kurotta doesn’t like apple or banana so I’ve stopped trying to give him that. You can try giving your bunny a small piece each time and monitor if her poop and pee changes. Do bear in mind that these are just treats and shouldn’t be given regularly. The HRS site has a list of safe veggies and fruits that you can refer to.
4. Kurotta gets unlimited timothy hay all day, about two tablespoons of pellets at night and about one cup of vegetables each day if possible (sometimes I run out and don’t get to buy more in time). How much a bunny should eat depends on size though.
5. You can give her some cardboard boxes instead – those are easily replaceable if she chews through. Toilet paper rolls are also a cheap option. I think there is a section on this forum dedicated to DIY toys. You may want to check it out
1. I heard it was so highly recommended but I was skeptical about it because Oreo eats everything or chews on everything so I have a fear she’ll eat the wood pellets instead of use it as a litter box. I switch up her litter all the time. I usually do because whatever is on sale is usually what I’ll get. I used CareFresh with a mix of aspen then I changed it to Kaytee for a little then back to CareFresh (alone this time). The smell is not at all different than her usual pee smell. It honestly just smells stronger. CareFresh also has different types of bedding (from what I noticed). So it could also be because of that. She’s not spayed which I am so scared of because I feel like I won’t be able to care for her while she’s recovering.
2. I usually change it every other day to every 3 days because she does fill it up within those days. I usually try to do it every other day because she fills it up that fast. But the smell usually happens before I change it. So on day 2 of me changing it, it smells. If that makes any sense. I would love to buy wood pellets because they are so much more affordable from the research I’ve done online.
3. Oreo has tried cilantro, romaine lettuce, celery, and bok choy. I want her to try more so today, I actually gave her banana, sage, and basil. Hopefully one of those become something she’ll eat. I don’t really plan to give her fruits at all. I just wanted to experiment to see what she likes.
4. Oreo is currently 2 lbs currently but I feel like she does need to eat more. She seems too underweight for her breed (which I still don’t know but I’m assuming she’s a Mini Rex). I give her 1/8 cup at morning and night. Then veggies every day but like your situation, I’ll sometimes run out.
5. Since my job has a lot of cardboard boxes that they just recycle, I think maybe I’ll take them for Oreo. Thank you!
1. You could get a litter box with a grate on top or DIY one to put on top of your existing litter box. That way Oreo won’t be able to get to the litter. Make sure that the litter can only be found in her litter box though (some people scatter it all over the cage and that doesn’t help in litter box training at all). One of our members here (Wick) has uploaded an album on a litter box with grate setup: https://binkybunny.com/MyProfile/tabid/175/asuid/35479/Default.aspx#showtab=photos
Carefresh or Kaytee is paper litter so it gets soggy faster and isn’t as good as wood pellets at odour control. Also, generally the pee of unspayed bunnies will smell more. It’s very important to spay her young as the risk of uterine cancer gets higher as she ages. There are a lot of helpful threads on how to take care of a spayed bunny after surgery so you may want to take a look at those
4. Have you brought her to a vet before? Usually a rabbit savvy vet will be able to tell you if a bunny is underweight.
1. I only keep her litter in one spot (she’s very good at only going there). I think I will update her litter box now that I want to invest in wood pellets!
4. I have not taken her to the vet yet. Which sounds bad because I’ve had her for about a year and a half. She is also not spayed so now that she’s 2 years old, I feel like it’s too late to take her.
2 years old is not too late to get her spayed. You really need to get her spayed if you want her to live a longer life. The statistics are somewhere in the ballpark of 80% chance of developing reproductive cancers by age 2. She’s now 2. You simply can’t wait any longer.
I read online somewhere (I believe either here or on the vet’s website that I was looking at) that after 2 years old, it’s already kind of late for her to get spayed. She’s now 2 years and 5 months so I feel like maybe it’s too late. Just trying to get others’ opinion on whether I should schedule an appointment soon to get her spayed.
2 years is not too old to be spayed. If she ends up with reproductive cancers she will need an emergency spay anyways, and quite possibly not make it through the surgery. Get her spayed ASAP.
This makes a lot of sense and definitely now want to get her spayed! Thank you!
2 years old is pretty young considering they can live up to an average age of 7-1x depending on breed. So no, it’s not too old to be spayed. Do bring her to a vet who has done many successful rabbit spays though as the surgery is quite invasive – you’d want a vet who’s experienced.
Is there specific expenses for when she gets spayed? Like surgery, recovery, etc? I know my local SPCA has experienced vets who spay/neuter rabbits and they do it for under $100.
It all depends on where you get her spayed. Most places the expense will cover the surgery, a pre surgery exam, and drugs to be given to you for post-op care.
Well, I change my bunnys litter at least once a week but normally three tims a week but if yours is smelling everyday I am guessing you have a little cage and suggest that you get a bigger one and you should definitly be feeding your rabbit each day. I give my rabbit grass, pasta hay and maybe a thew treats for throughout the day and each night I give it some sort of vegetable for dinner. I insist not give your rabbit too much fruits because fruit like bananas and apples are accually very sugary and are known as treats for bunnies and please don’t make the same mistake as I did and re-fill your bunnies water bottles each day not just topping it up
Hope this helps

You give your bun pasta????
I change my own buns’ litter every 2 to 3 days, and clean their litterbox out completely with white vinegar every Saturday afternoon (in fact I’m fixing to do it in a couple of hours, they’re still having their afternoon nap). I use Carefresh myself and it does quite well, from where I stand, both at controlling odors (my buns are neutered/spayed respectively so that takes care of that) and absorbing, however one does have to use a bit of elbow grease during the litterbox cleaning to get out the residue which sticks to the bottom of the container.
1. I was skeptical about wood pellets too. I decided to try it out last week and am never looking back! I had Back 2 Nature paper pellets before, which were fine but the wood pellets keep odours away so much better.
2. I have a large litter box where both my rabbits can lay in. They only pee and poop in one spot of the box. I empty the pee corner ever other day, wipe down with vinegar and scoop out poops. Every week I completely empty the litter box and clean with vinegar.
3.Spinach, endive, arugula and chicory mostly. I give them a grape, raisin, strawberry piece, kiwi piece or banana piece as treat every now and then. Usually whatever fruit I’m having I share with my buns.
4. I feed them pellets (30 gr per bun) in the morning, veggies (a hand full per bun) in the evening and I give treats (1 piece of a fruit per bun) once every few days. I check the hay atleast two times a day and make sure it’s topped up.
5. Mine played a lot with a rope-ball toy, a hyacinth tunnel and a wobble thingy made out of rope and paper. I said played because they chewed it all so it’s broken and or gone (eaten? :’D) already. I’ve placed an order for replacement toys now, haha! They also love cardboard boxes to chew and any other sort of tunnels, news papers and paper bags. Weirdly they are not fond of plastic noisy balls and toilet rolls.
no, i meant pasture hay, it is food and bedding for bunnys
I used to be able to go once a week without changing it but since I moved her to her new location (which is way bigger than her previous location), her litter smelt stronger. Her cage / excerise area in which is 7ft x 6ft but she has my whole room to also run around which is about 10ft x 10ft. I feed her fresh food every day. That’s horrible to not feed her every day. I started to give her fruit like ~1 tbsp and she doesn’t like it so now I decide to never give her fruit (or at least once or twice a month).
1. If I use wood pellets, do you think wood pellets from Lowes are fine or do I need to find a specific kind? Because I’d really like to change the odor control especially because she isn’t spayed (yet).
2. Okay so Oreo pees and poop in her litter but will occasionally poo on our carpet. Is that normal? & I also clean her cage with white vinegar and water solution so I know for a fact that I’m not cleaning her cage harmfully.
3. I really only feed Oreo spinach, kale, celery and cilantro. Oreo doesn’t enjoy fruit so I figured, nevermind!
4. Oreo gets about 2 tbsp of pellets in the morning and night (so total 1/4 cup a day). She gets hay daily like changed daily.
5. Oreo loves running around more than playing with toys! She has tons but never plays with them.

Ah okay. Sorry I was imagining you feeding penne pasta or something
I’m not from the US so I’m not sure if Lowes is fine, but I’m sure there are many others here who would be able to help
Having some accidental poop outside of the box is normal and it happens even with neutered/spayed bunnies occasionally.
I am so jealous lol. My bunny cost me almost 200 to get spayed, now I feel like I got ripped off.
1. I believe Lowes pellets are fine, as long as they don’t have added accelerants they are fine. If you have a tractor supply near you you cam get equine bedding pellets from there which are the same thing.
2. Some poops outside the tray is normal, especially if not spayed. Rabbits do 300-500 poops a day so getting every single one in is a challenge Vinegar and water is the most suitable thing to clean with being non toxic.
3. Those veggies are good, leafy greens are the best for them. Yippy can also try Swiss chard, bok choy, fennel, red leaf lettuce and romaine lettuce ( though romaine in some areas had been recalled due to E.coli at the moment)
4. Pellets sound good, you wouldn’t want to fed more than that but 1/4 cup is fine.
5. This is also normal. Mine often only okay with toys if they’re in their way
