My sweet baby, Dusk, (New Zealand Black, age unknown. [got her as a gift from my Agriculture teacher for all my hard work with the bunnies]) recently (by accident) got pregnant by my 7 or 8 month old Mini Rex, Toast. I’m so worried that she will either die during delivery or will eat the babies.. I’ve heard it’s common for older bunnies’ to do crazy things like that. I found out she was pregnant, because of the accidental “jig” her and Toast did, and because her belly has began to harden. I don’t over feed her, and I provide lots of water, hay, and all natural rabbit pellets. Could she be bloated instead of pregnant? Also she has ear mites from her last home at my school. It’s INFESTED, with ear mites. I’ve tried everything I can to fix it. Ivermectin, regular cleaning/ checking, applying vasiline, trying to remove crust as gently as possible, NOTHING seems to work. Some people say to put honey in the ears, or use mineral oil or olive oil, but I don’t want to risk hurting her in anyway. Back at the school she lived in a wire bottom cage that was suspended from the ground to catch poop for compost. She only got fed once a day, and got very little water. Of course here at my home I let her hop about inside my room, and house. Sometimes if it’s nice out, I put her in her hutch. I usually feed her twice a day, one time in the morning, and again before bedtime. She ALWAYS has unlimited hay, and water. Right now though I’m worried if maybe I’m not feeding her enough, or giving her enough water. I also worry that maybe taking her from my room to her hutch isn’t such a good idea, because it could stress her out. I hear that if bunnies get too stressed they could abort their babies, or miscarry. As much as I would love to have baby bunnies of my own, I just don’t know if I’ll be a good enough Grand Bunny to them. I want to give them the world, raise them all to love me, but then I’ll have to see them go, because my mom doesn’t want to keep a whole bunch of bunnies. By the way, Dusk has only been pregnant for 2 weeks, and her belly is already hard and kinda pudgy when she loafs. Could that mean she will have a big litter, and if so how many could it be on average? I only want what’s best for her and I need advice ASAP.
Thanks! -Annalyse Lewis, Toast and Dusk’s mommy.
