        Hi all,

We are new here and unfortunately we have lost one of our rabbits today.

We are struggling to understand how he went downhill so quickly.

He was at the vets yesterday and was injected with Baytril, Buscopan and Metacam as well as a large amount of fluids. Within hours he rapidly went downhill. We are struggling to understand how he passed away so quickly when our vet said he would be ok after all the injections. He was struggling with his breathing and the vet diagnosed it as an overworking gut (opposite to stasis apparently).

Any comments would be welcome to help us understand what may have happened.

        Many thanks.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Rabbits can go downhill very quickly unfortuntaley. I know a rabbits gut is very sensitive and I’ve experienced a lot of gut problems with my rabbit but never an overworked gut.

I lost a rabbit a few weeks back and it was very sudden and a shock so I know how you are feeling at the moment. I did ring the vet to get some answers which helped so if you haven’t already, maybe ring the vet with some questions and see if they can answer them.

I’m sorry for you loss. I know that so often rabbits go very quickly without answers. Incredibly frustrating. I don’t really have any answers but there are many knowledgeable members here. Hopefully they can give you some insight. Most times however unless an autopsy (or necropsy, never sure which term) is performed one can’t be for sure. And even then sometimes there is no definitive answer.

Not knowing why is a horrible position to be in. We experienced such. Regardless, I hope you find some answers that my help with some closure. Again sorry for your loss.
