Hello!

Last night, I adopted a beautiful girl bunny from a local rabbit rescue. (We met her last week.) She’s about two years old and lived in a heated garage in her own private pen, alongside about ten other bunnies each in their own pens. Now, she lives by herself in our kitchen–with freedom to come out as long as we’re watching. She was consistently socialized, but we don’t know exactly what kind of interaction she’s used to.

Bunny came with the name Gabriella (or Gabby), but we’d like to change her name to Galatea. Most of the bunnies adopted from this particular rabbit rescue get their names changed. However, my mother is sure that changing her name is a bad idea. (My mother read an article about an elephant at a zoo becoming depressed when its name was changed, and recovering only years later when the zookeepers reverted to the elephant’s original name–but a bunny is not an elephant!) Our bunny does not seem to respond to any name yet, but she’s still new to us and mostly wants to hide in her box.

What have been your experiences with changing your bunny’s name?
