Hi there! My 1 year old French Lop Velma is great at using her litter box- as long as there’s no litter in it. S small square of blanket in the back helps encourage her to use it, but any other litter she angrily flings out and wont go in the box until it’s out. When theres just the fleece in it she uses it perfectly! I know some bunnies just dont like litter (she also prefers to lay out on plastic or linoleum floors than on carpet or blankets) but I’m looking for a way to keep it from getting stinky. I try to clean it as often as possible but even so there’s always a bit of faint odor, and if I can’t get to it right away her room gets pretty smelly. If you have any ideas please let me know!

I’m always an advocate for litter boxes with a grate as I find that these solve a lot of litter box problems (chewing, smell, cleaning etc).

The litter would be at the bottom of the grate but still in the box, so bunnies won’t be able to chew or fling them out. It also prevents their feet/tummy/bottom from getting easily stained with poop or pee because they can’t sit in (among) it. I use wood pellets and they absorb both pee and its smell really well – when it’s time to clean, I just scoop and throw out the soiled parts.

Litter is helpful, but you can always try just filling up the litter box with hay and using hay as the litter and if you’re rabbit doesn’t like using her litter box as much, the hay makes her more likely to use her litter box because rabbits like to eat while they poop.

A splash of apple cider vinegar in her water bowl can help neutralize urine smell, but the caveat is obviously smelling the urine signals it’s time to clean it, so just keep up with regular cleaning as well.
