I’m really worried that the tile is too slippery.  I built this NIC enclosure and for a long time debated on what to do about flooring.  Linoleum was often recommended but it was kind of pricey so I wanted to see if I could do anything with what I had.  Now that I have a bunny in it though, I’m wondering if it’s going to work.

I just got this bunny yesterday, and I want to potty train, so I’m not putting anything soft in there right now just in case it confuses bunbun.  He seemed to be able to explore the whole area when we put him in last night but I noticed that sometimes he does slide a little, like when he’s hopping out of the litter box, and he was kind of exploring super cautiously yesterday when we got him.. like doing this stretching walk kind of thing.  Right now.. this morning, he has a tendency to just sit like a loaf in that other corner where he is right now. Or stay in the litter box.  He walks around a little but sometimes when he walks it’s like his hind legs occasionally will  slip/slide when pushing off if that makes sense .. it only happens occasionally so should I be worried??  It doesn’t seem to be preventing him from walking around..  I have anxiety so it’s possible I’m just too worried.  T_T  The flooring is a plastic shelving material, and the tiles are just extra tiles from our new house.  They’re actually not that slippery to me, there is a texture, so I was kind of surprised D_D  And the shelving material has like ridges on it.

Also how long do you guys think it’ll take to potty train?   He’s only 3-4 months old.. not sure.  I’m not doing any treats so Idk if I’m not reinforcing enough.  Just putting his poops in the box.  I only saw him pee once last night and wiped it up and put in there.. since then I haven’t seen anything so I don’t know if that means he’s using the box or he just hasn’t peed since last night.  How often do bunnies pee??

ugh sorry I don’t know how to get this link or picture thing to work..

Also how much water should he be drinking a day and how can I tell if he’s drinking enough?  I did see him drink at least once from the dish and from the bottle, but the water level doesn’t seem to have changed from what I can see.

It looks like a really good enclosure with tons of space Is he a Nethie? He’s adorable! Linoleum, much like hardwood, can be tricky for them to navigate, and it will take a lot of time to get used to. I used to live in a carpeted apartment and they’d binky and run around a ton, but when I moved to hardwood it seemed like they forgot how to hop. They still don’t binky a ton or run around a ton, but they’re much more comfortable on it then they were 8 months ago when we moved in. If you want put fleece in it, and take it out once a day just to spritz with white vinegar+water and wipe it down. You can wash it 2-3 times a week instead of everyday this way.

Potty training him is going to be difficult until after he is neutered due to his hormones, so you won’t have much luck until then. Right now what’s important is that you lay a good foundation for after his neuter. So honestly putting something soft in there isn’t going to really make a difference. It’ll just help him get around easier. You can wipe up his pee and put it in his box, and put the poops in the box, and see if there’s a particular spot/corner he favors, and keep the box there. Also, make sure his hay/food is next to the litter box because most buns will poop where they eat. Just noticing from the picture, but did you remove that plastic sticker from the box? Bunnies love to chew, and it wouldn’t be fun to deal with an episode of stasis shortly after bringing him home.

Bunnies don’t drink a ton of water, but if you want to measure just give 2 cups of water and then measure at the end of each day to see what he drank.

Remember he’s brand new to you and your house. It’s a scary new world to him. He’s not going to probably want to leave his little space for the first few days. Just be patient with him.

Aww he’s so tiny and cute. Looks quite fuzzy too.

Your bunny may not like the slippery surface, which is why he is choosing to stay in a corner. My whole house is tiled too so I use interlocking foam mats as flooring for my bun. It’s not too expensive and provides enough grip to not slide around, but isn’t as hard as a tile surface. It’s also water resistant so you can just clean the area by wiping any pee up with a paper towel or cloth . The only concern would be the bunny chewing and ingesting the foam, so if you do get them, you’ll have to observe and see if your bun chews them.

I make sure all the edges are slightly out of the enclosure panels so Kurotta cannot get to them (edges and corners are the easiest to get to when it comes to chewing).

That looks like quite a huge bottle so a tiny bunny like yours would take a while to get through the whole bottle. That may be why the water level doesn’t look like it’s decreasing.

              Thanks for the responses!
He’s a holland lop not a nethie actually, but the ears haven’t lopped yet.

I put the litter box where I saw him pee, and I haven’t seen any pee since yesterday night, so I’m guessing it’s cause they’re in the box… I hope so! Am pretty surprised actually. I haven’t taken the sticker off the box yet .. was worried about the sticky residue.. but thanks for letting me know. He hasn’t taken any interest in chewing it thankfully but once I get a chance when he’s actually not in the box I’ll take it off

He still is staying in that corner .. Idk if it’s cause that’s where the hay is and he spends most of the time eating.. but once in awhile he’ll be sitting in that other corner next to the box. Other than that I rarely see him go anywhere else, but I know he does cause there are stray poops elsewhere when I come back from work. Thanks for the advice on the fleece, looks like I need to get a spray bottle all I have is a jug of vinegar for cleaning.

I’ve heard of people using foam but yeah I’m worried about chewing. Bunny attempted to chew on the edge of the tiles and some of the cage bars but stopped, I’m not sure what his chewing tendencies are so I’m hesitant to invest in foam mats. He does chew on paper towels.

What kind of litter do you use for the box? If it’s wood pellets, you will see them in an expanded state if the bunny has peed. If it’s paper, it should also be wet or at least damp. If there’s no litter, then the box should have some pee stains too.

Even if the sticker leaves some residue, you can get it off by scrubbing with some soap and warm water, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Hmm. There’s a few possible reasons on why he is staying in the corner:

                1) Since you only just got him yesterday, he may not be used to the new environment yet and feels unsure about the area. If this is the reason, give him some time and he’ll be able to sort it out himself eventually.

                2) You mentioned that you rarely see him go elsewhere but see stray poops when you come back from work. It could be that he isn’t quite sure whether you are a threat or not. So when you are around, he just avoids moving just in case you’re a predator. To make him understand you’re not a threat, try sitting in his pen and allow him to come and sniff you if he wants to. You can also try to feed him some treats if he comes to you. Try not to touch/pat him though (although it may be very tempting to do so).

                3) He doesn’t like the slippery surface and hence doesn’t want to walk on it much. As I mentioned, edges are always the most attractive to buns, which is why I keep the foam mat edges outside of the barriers. I find that sometimes they chew out of curiosity though (this is normally not habitual chewing and will only occur once or twice then stop), and during these times they usually don’t attempt to actually ingest the chewed item. Bear in mind that bunnies can also chew and ingest fleece, so regardless of what flooring you use, you will still have to observe and find out which is the best option for your bunny.

                4) The last possibility is that he is feeling unwell. You’ll have to see if there are other signs apart from him being in the corner. Check his poop shape/texture, water and food intake, signs of tummy gas (e.g. staying hunched constantly, looking lethargic, not eating or drinking), his pee colour and consistency etc.

Those are some of the things I could think of for now

It’s wood pellets.  Very interesting on expanded state, thanks!  So how often should I change it?  Should I invest in one of those shovel things?

I just saw him go over to the water dish on the other side and drink while I was hanging out by his pen– yay!  But then he went back to his litter box after that to eat.  Seems he either really doesn’t like the floor or he really likes his litter box (which is where the food and hay is..)  but sometimes he’s just sitting there.  When I first got him, I noticed it seemed he liked sitting on the grass mat too, thinking because it’s not slippery.  I wonder if he’ll get used to the tiles over time.  They do have a texture so I think they’d be comparable to linoleum.  Yeah he chewed the tiles I think out of curiosity cause I haven’t noticed him trying to do that anymore. With the flooring and fleece, I work during the day .. when people say I should observe do I need to make sure to observe 24/7?  GI stasis sounds so scary and it seems lops have rather fragile tummies.

You might also want to give him a ‘hidey box’ of some sort. He might feel scarily exposed, since he’s new and doesn’t have anywhere to hide. I just get free cardboard boxes from local shops (they always have tons they’re getting rid of), and cut two doorways in them. My bunnies love them, and it really helps them to feel like they have a safe space they can hide in.

Obviously you can’t observe 24/7, but keep a close eye when you first put flooring/fleece in, and check regularly that there’s not big chunks missing

I normally change the litter once I see that the wood pellets are all crumbly and can’t absorb pee anymore. Personally I didn’t get a shovel because I have a mini broom + dustpan set and find that the dustpan can be used as a shovel to scoop up the litter. The set is useful when I clean the cage or want to sweep up stray poops too.

It’s not good for his joints to be on tiles long term if he is sliding left and right anyway, so he shouldn’t be getting used to it.

And yes as S&L said, you can just look out for chewed bits on the floor or missing chunks to know if he has been chewing on it.

Well it’s been two days and now he’s totally okay on the tile and hopping around no problem now without slipping! So happy about that. I just put in a cardboard hidey house as well.

Honestly, now that he’s learned it safe to walk on, he’ll be fine on the tile. He’ll slip every now and then when he’s excited, but overall he’ll be fine. I’m sure the hidey box will help him feel safer Try sitting in his pen with him or even when he’s out for exercise and try to feed him his pellets. It’s such a good bonding technique.

He keeps sticking his head through the bars and it makes me so nervous that he’ll either find a way to squeeze through (prob not.. he’s getting bigger every day it seems) or get stuck (agh!!!!!)
