        Hi all!

Milo has been with me for two weeks now and, yesterday, I spotted a strange mark on his ear. At first I thought it was just some dirt so I took a soft, mildly damp cloth and tried to wipe it away. Except, when I did, some of the skin and fur came away with it!!!! I looked more closely and it seems to be a crust or scab along the outer edge of his ear? It’s black with little bits of white on it and doesn’t seem to hurt him at all – he didn’t even pause in his eating when I was looking at it and wiping it down.

I’ve attached some pictures. It could be ear mites – I wouldn’t know if he is scratching his ear ‘more’ than usual because he’s only been around for such a short time. Any suggestions on what it could be or treatment would be HUGELY appreciated (I have sent the vet a picture so long to see if he needs to be rushed in but I am on edge while I wait).

        TIA

Hi! I can’t see your pics, but I agree that ear mites could have caused him to scratch his ear enough to form a scab. Does he have any spots on his ears/head where there appears to be thinning/missing fur? It could also just be dry skin, or hopefully nothing at all! But if the vet does suspect mites, he will probably have you bring Milo in, as the only way to truly rule out mites is with a microscope.

Hmm looks like the picture uploads failed as there aren’t any pictures.

I believe you don’t really need to “compare” whether he is scratching his ears more frequently than before. Is he scratching his ears or shaking his head excessively? If it really is mites, then you could try Revolution.

oh no! Can’t seem to upload them on the second try either..

Thanks to you both for the responses. I’ll wait on the vet then…

If it is mites: any suggestions on how to disinfect/clear his bedding (an everything else in his play area) of the eggs and lavae that may still be around? He’s still being potty trained so all blankets and bedding are being washed almost daily but we’re in a severe water crisis at the moment so I’m trying to limit that as much as possible.

If it really is mites, then you could try Revolution.

I’ll have a look if I can get my hands on some but I’m in South Africa so we often don’t have access to all the wonderful products that are available overseas. Rabbits aren’t popular pets here, either, so even finding a vet was tough!

Good (?) news! Vet confirmed mites and has Revolution so I can start treatment today. He suggested frontline spray to clear the eggs and lavae from the rest of the household.

Good that he has been treated!

But please DON’T USE FRONTLINE spray for the household. It contains an active ingredient, Fipronil which is DEADLY toxic to rabbits.

When Thor had mites, I was able to get the eggs and larvae out of the rest of the house by vacuuming well and throwing out old towels/things that can’t be vacuumed and wiped down.

Oh goodness!!! Thank you for the heads up!

I’ll find something else then and make sure I vacuum and thoroughly wash everything. Will raise the point with the vet as well ? he came highly recommended so I’m a little disappointed

Agree with TB regarding Revolution (ok) and Frontline (not ok). Vets are not infallible, and while we cannot provide “medical” advice, we can always offer our opinions and experiences so please feel free to post any questions you have .

Glad you’ll be bringing it up with the vet It’s a common problem that comes up because Frontline is used a lot for dogs and cats.

Sorry for the panicked capital letters, I had a friend’s bun get very sick from Fipronil recently (he’s ok now) so I reacted strongly.

Panic is a feeling I understand completely so there’s no need to apologize – I’m glad you let me know!
