With spring slow to come where I live… I must admit that I am slightly relieved that it is taking its dear sweet time to warm up here… All winter long I have been wondering what major steps I need to take to ward off deadly fly strike. I adopted BunBun in the fall and had the luxury of keeping my windows closed for a very very long winter but now that spring is due ( even though it doesn’t feel like it) I am worried to pieces about the power of a measly fly!

I rent in a 100 year old house. I can guarantee I will be buying a ton of sealant caulking because the wood molding around the window frames needs to be sealed but still there is the problem of the windows themselves. Old double sash replacement windows with burnt to a dead crisp weather stripping that just comes a flaking on down every time I open or close any window since the day I began renting, these will definitely be needing me to replace all the weather stripping. Screens… ugh! Holes! Yikes! More money… Wood Slates for each window! “For What?!?!?” Do you ask, well once I open the bottom part of many of my windows, the top window begins to just slide down and lord knows I’ve taken brooms to the many things that have flown in from topside before! Hmmm…. maybe just keep all windows closed and turn on ACs?… I don’t have the money for that! The month or two that I look forward to opening the windows is the same time period I look forward to digging out of the heating season’s bills! To add to the anxiety, things just fly in the front door, too!

I have read that some recommend indoor bug zappers that don’t use chemicals to attract the flying fiends but use a special light and then zap! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ (Something tellls me I am finally going to enjoy hearing the sound of another one bites the dust! ) but I am having a hard time deciphering which ones are safe and are truly indeed built for indoor usage…

I have also read that there are medicines that we can use on our bunnies safely? Pesticides on fastidious self groomers….hmmm… has anyone used them successfully? More tips are keeping a very clean litter box and cage ( I like to call my BunBun’s habitat her den) and daily check ins on bunnies coats, morning and evening due to how fast fly larvae hatch. Combing our rabbits fur and checking bunny bottoms often! And in general keeping a very clean home can be very helpful to ward off flys.

Does anyone else have tips for reducing the chances of Deadly Fly Strike? Would love to hear that I don’t have to go into full lockdown just when it is becoming nice enough outside to come out of hibernation!

Oh! Fly Paper! Years ago I tried to go buy some because we had little fruit gnats from onions and I couldn’t even find any in the stores! I know the stuff is awful but a fly can be a killer! I will wallpaper my room if it meant the life of my bunny!

There’s a highly available treatment called ‘rearguard’. Its very good at preventing flystrike. It last for up to 10 weeks after applying I would use it during summer when rabbits are outside as one has a tendency to drag her back end or use xeno 450 (I use monthly) it’s good for parasites. But I’d really recommend rearguard for warmer months it works quite well

I have heard of Rearguard. Here’s a tricky question… is it expensive? Not that I will put a price on any member of my family’s well being, but I will need to prepare

I bought rearguard when I had outdoor bunnies – I got it on Amazon, I can’t remember but I’m sure it was under £10.

But, generally it’s very unusual for healthy bunnies with clean butts to get fly strike. Check that she doesn’t get poop stuck to her butt, and clean her litter trays daily and she should be fine.
