I have recently adopted another rabbit to bond with my current rabbit Wicket. They are both two years old and neutered males. Chase was neutered when he came into the shelter so I waited six weeks to start the bonding process after I adopted him. Ive been bonding in a neutral territory and they’ve showed good signs like grooming each other and laying down. The only problem is Chase humps Wicket excessively. I initially thought it was a dominance thing that would settle down but it hasn’t. He makes this oinking sound while doing it which I recently read was a hormonal mating sound so Im concerned he was fixed too late. I also noticed that he gets an erection so was wondering if that happens when rabbits hump for dominance? Its also not just wicket he humps, he humps me as well which I am confused about since he is neutered.

I can honestly say that I’ve never heard the words “rabbit” and “erection” used in the same sentence. XD

They do get an erection when humping for dominance. Humping can include vocalizations – it’s all part of a “program” located in circuits of neurons in the spine and this “program” or “application” is there whether the bun is fixed or not. Even baby buns can hump and get erections, the “app” is built-in, and that’s very practical because once the bun matures, it doesn’t have to learn how to perform the sexual act. It’s not exclusive for rabbits, it works similarly in all mammals.

That said, buns do have some production of testosterone in their adrenal glands (as have humans) and particularly in the spring, this can lead to displays of sexual behavior.

how does Wicket respond to the humping? If Wicket gets really fed up with it, it’s likely to lead to fighting, and that would not be good at all. If you intervene, how do the buns react?

Wicket starts to get fed up after a while of it and he starts to run away. Chase then chases him and I break it up by putting my arm in between them. But as soon as I move my arm Chase goes right back to humping. They haven’t fought or even nipped each other in any of the bonding sessions so far. Chase does pull Wickets fur out while humping but Ive heard thats common

Bombur and Asriel like this too. Asriel humps Bombur constantly during sessions. I’ve found the smoosh technique works amazingly when this happens. Basically just put them side by side and pet them together. It returns the session to a more positive note. When I’ve done session humping is like 90% of what happens and the other 10% is smooshing.
