So Dasher got spayed two days ago and is still in recovery. We put a litter box for her with the metal grate cover on it for her to use. She, instead, just pulls at it and scratched at the grate. I’m under the impression that she’s trying to get rid of it, sense it.may be irrating her surgery site. I moved it for her and she instantly peed and pooped, making me think she was holding it in. My question is, is it safe for us to let Dasher lie in the litter, seeing how I think shes more comfortable that way. Thanks for any info

What kind of litter is it? I would think that pelleted litter would be OK?

Maybe you could put just hay for now, and change it out daily?

It’s the shredded cardboard like stuff. The hay has sharp little points on some of the prices and I’m worried that might hurt the surgery sight, but I may try that

I know that with my cat, i wasn’t supposed to use clay litter due to the dust after his neuter, but I feel like carefresh would be OK…. maybe some other’s can advise who have dealt with this.

You might be right about the hay being irritating, but I think carefresh would be OK? You might call your vet and ask specifically about that bedding.

You could also put shredded newspaper. That’s what my vet recommended for my cat’s litter box when he was recovering.

That’s basically what we have. It’s thicker than newspaper, which is the only reason I said it’s like cardboard. It doesn’t seem to be irrating the surgery site, but I’m just worried. I may call a vet. Thanks.

Luna uses the shredded Carefresh. I wasn’t advised to change it after her spay, nor did it aggravate her incision. The one thing I did do was I changed out the litter more often than usual to help keep Luna’s incision away from the soiled litter. Dasher will be fine as long as she can get into her litter box easily until she is healed .

getting home that was the first thing i checked. thats what we use as well. thats good to know that Luna used it and it was OK. I think Dasher is finally getting there. I found lots of poops and pee spots in her litter, with a almost empty water bowl and food eaten, something I have to sort of force on her the last couple of days. she even went as far as to ask for a head rub and nipped me gently when i didn’t do it immediately. shes a drama queen.

That’s great! Haha, I love it when they do things where their personality shines through. Luna is all about jealousy. If I even look at my cat, she will hop over immediately demanding head pets .
