        Hello!

I got my bunny Caramel almost a week ago and I already have a problem… I feel like a terrible bunny mom…

She is a Teddy, was born in mid-December last year. The breeder said she was too small, so she wasn’t out for purchase until now… I asked her A LOT of questions, especially about feeding. She gave me 2 little packets of the food she is used to and told me to feed the first one and then start mixing the second one with the one I bought. She told me not to feed her with vegetables, grass, fruit etc. until May, so I didn’t. Caramel has of course premium quality hay available all day + water.

She feeds her bunnies this: Berkel pellets (18,0% protein, 15,0% fiber, 2,8% fat, 9,0% ash, 13.500 i.E. vitamin A, 800 i.E. vitamin D3, 50 mg vitamin E, 15 mg copper, methionine) mixed with some avena.

        Here’s the problem:

When I brought her home, she had very stinky and squishy poop (only a few normal, round, non-stinky ones), that had very dark color… I read it was normal, but she pooped those A LOT – just like 5 normal poops a day. It would also be  a little bit runny.

I tried taking away the pellet mix and fed her with hay and water for 2 days – everything got better, she had only a few of those squishy poops, that she ate right away and majority of her poop was perfectly normal (hard, round, without smell). Today, I tried giving her a little bit of pellets in the morning, but she started to have “bad” poops again, so I took it away. The breeder told me to feed unlimited of those pellets ’till summer, so I am scared if I take them away it will hurt her… She seemed fine and happy, but I am afraid of long-time consenquences…

Thank you so much for any replies!

If the pellets cause bad/sticky poops, taking them away won’t cause her any harm. You should try and replace the pellets with a different type as she will need the nutrients. Just introduce the new pellets very slowly.

I agree with Sarah, it sounds like the pellets are a problem for her. Could you get another brand of pellets? She should still have pellets in her diet as she is still under the 6 months mark and she needs the nutrients. I would suggest trying a different brand. Also, are you giving her unlimited pellets? I don’t recommend that because it can make them eat less hay, since pellets are tastier. And are you sure these poops aren’t excess cecotropes? An unlimited pellet diet can be too nutrient rich, causing overproduction of cecals.

              Thank you for your replies!

I have bought her junior pellets that are aparrently one of the best you can find (at least where I live), but the breeder told me to first feed the one package that she gave me by itself and then start mixing the new pellets with the second one. At first she had unlimited pellets (as the breeder reccomended to me), but after I gave her the hay for 2 days, I started by just a few pellets, but that caused her runny poop too.

And are you sure these poops aren’t excess cecotropes?

I don’t think so, since she produced only those bad ones and no normal ones.

Should I start mixing the old pellets she is used to with the new ones I bought right away (of course slowly) and not feeding the first package by itself?
