Hi guys, bit of a problem here. Over the last week, the bunnies seem to be eating less hay. I’m not sure if it’s one of them in particular or if it’s both. I fo see the two of them eating so I think it might be the two if them combined eating less? Usually they do the majority of their hay eating overnight, from roughly 4am til about 9am. They graze throughout the day but most of their hay consumption is early, early morning. I have to top up quite a few times. Over the last week however it seems they’re barely eating more than a handful each.

It’s not health/dental related I don’t think because they both still do eat hay. I’ve watched them to be sure they’re not just picking it up and dropping it and I’ve also sat and handfed them hay strands. Buttercup usually gets fed up and goes to the litter tray to help herself to the hay and Peanut will sit and keep taking hay til he’s full then he’ll go and lay down. I give them unlimited orchard and timothy and a couple handfuls of oat every day though I’ve given unlimited oat over the past week in an attempt to get them to eat more. Often they’ll have a day or two where they seem to go off their hay a little and it’s usually because they’ve gotten a bit bored so I change things up a bit I. E. Stop giving them timothy for a few days for example and then give them tons of orchard and oat and by the time I give them back the timothy, they’re thrilled and excited for it again. That tactic hasn’t worked this time, and as I said, it’s been a week now

They’re both still pooping, though slightly less due to less hay but they’re pooping well regardless. Water intake and peeing is normal. Behaviour wise they’re normal. A little lazier perhaps in the evenings but no signs of lethargy – they still run to the hay box when I get it down to refill, they still run about and binky etc. It’s started getting very warm here so wondering if that’s a factor in laziness?

In terms of other food, they get about a teaspoon of probiotic pellets in the morning at 5:30. In the evening at 5:30,, 1 to 2 fibafirst sticks each. I’ve cut down on those slightly since Thursday as Buttercup is a little overweight. They get dried dandelion for our evening game (you all know about it by now ) They get a few pieces of dried chicory root as a grooming bribe but no more than a teaspoon and then they get a sprinkling of forage overnight mixed with their hay. Not sure if I can cut back anything else ?

Any ideas would be much appreciated, sorry for the wall of text. Thanks guys!

        Update at the bottom!

Could it just be an old or stale bag? It’s weird that they’re both eating less, which makes me think the hay itself could be the problem.

P.S… where in the UK is it getting warm? We still have cold and rain in London

Haha, perhaps I should have said warmER, rather than warm

I don’t think it’s stale, well I hope not as the orchard is a fresh 11kg box. The timothy I’ve only had for a couple of months as that’s an 11kg box too. Both hays look really fresh and very green. Hmm

My first thought was also the weather, especially if there’s been no other changes in their hay or environment etc.

Is there anything I can do to encourage them or do I just wait for them to start eating more on their own?

Hi guys, just thought I’d update if anyone is interested Since making this thread, both buns have started eating significantly more hay, thank goodness. They eat a little between about 4am and 5:30am and then eat tons between then and roughly 10am. I’m back to topping up several times. Woo! I think it’s just a case of them getting bored of hay but I’m not really sure what to do. I already give them a few types, and add dried leaves and flowers on the top before I go to bed so they can forage. Should I try more types of hay? I give unlimited orchard and timothy and small amounts of oat.

On a slightly related note, after taking the buns to get their claws clipped, I had them weighed and Buttercup is a little overweight again. She’s put on 200g. I was advised to scatter her pellets and make her work for them. I already scatter them because she would otherwise practically inhale them. I don’t scatter them particularly far though so I could try that but if she gets fed up, she might just try and steal Peanut’s pellets. I hand feed him because he is a much more calm eater lol. If I scatter them for both, how will I know how many pellets each bun is getting?

Could you get two treat balls and make them both work for their pellets? Unfair to Peanut, but Buttercup must keep up her delicate figure! When Quincy was adopted I sent him with his treat ball because he was a total pig and would choke on his pellets. Now I’m seeing that Ophelia is starting to just cram like 6 or 7 in at a time…I think I need to get another treat ball!

Also, Ophelia went through a little phase where I felt like she wasn’t eating as much hay. I really have no indication as to why, but I wonder if it could be a weather thing? The weather is so unpredictable in Florida…one day its 30 degrees and the next day its 80….Florida bunnies must be so confused with their molting XD

I’m glad your bunnies are eating a lot of hay again!
I second BunNoob on the treat balls! It works great for my little piggy bunny. It’s only dispenses one or two pellets at a time and they push it around everywhere, even when all the food is gone so it’s pretty good to get your bun moving too.
I got mine off Chewy, they’re originally for kittens and they came in a pack of two so it was perfect for my two bunnies.

Thanks for the idea regarding treat balls guys! I actually used to give them their pellets in a treat ball when they were teeny tiny but they lost interest pretty quickly. It might be worth giving them another go, I’ll pick two up on payday and see what happens
