When I try hand feeding my bunny, she grabs the food out of my hand and then runs off somewhere else to eat it.

I also observe her grabbing a stack of hay from her hay rack (located on top of her liter box) and then hop to the other side of the cage to eat it which makes her cage a mess!!

Does anyone know why bunnies do this and how to stop hay from getting everywhere in the cage?

The hand feeding thing is normal. Buns will do that with tasty bits of food and treats. It’s just because they think you’ll take it from them or something. It’s quite funny sometimes. For the hay, I’m not really sure! I haven’t heard of that before but maybe someone else has. It could be because her litter box might not be clean enough or comfy? I know one time I didn’t clean the buns box because I was sick and she would just take some strands of hay and go to the other end of her cage. I decided to clean it anyways that day.

I’m not sure how long you’ve had your bunny, but it’s either that she’s not comfortable eating in front of you yet, or she is just possessive and doesn’t want to share her food with others As Rain said, lots of bunnies run away with treats and such as they think of us as a potential thief who wants to steal their treats.

As for the hay, some bunnies just don’t like eating from a rack (I recently found out that my bun doesn’t). Perhaps your bun is like that too and prefers eating off the ground? I put the hay itself on the grate of Kurotta’s litter box and he’s been eating much more hay since then. It does get messier but I guess it’s part of having a rabbit lol!

Sam does this too, in terms of eating elsewhere when being hand fed. It’s very normal haha – they’re just being food possessive; I find they’re more likely to do it when it’s something they really enjoy, such as their favourite treat
