› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Tambor has g i stasis and it’s all my fault
I write to you with a broken heart. We just came back from the emergency room, Tambor has G I stasis due to stress. We are pet sitting a bunny and although they are in completely different areas and cannot see each other, he probably smelled her and got very upset.
I feel like the worse owner in the world. if he were to die, I’d never ever forgive myself. He’s my baby, only 2 and a half, and he doesn’t deserve it, he’s so young and has already gone through too much with his previous owner. I’m angry as well, I did everything to the book, perfect litter, perfect food, bunny proofed house, always sourounded by us (we work from home). and now this. he’s in so much pain.
We took him to the emergency vet only 3 hours after his dinner (he ate his veggies but not pellets). he had a bloated stomach and was barely moving. His X-ray showed minor blockage (the vet says it’s because we took him to her very soon) and loads of gas. although she remains possitive, she said that g I stasis is a very serious condition and everything can change in the matter of minutes.
she gave us the option of having him in the clinic for 24h, but he’d have been alone for the first 7. so he’s home now (my hubby will stay with him all night) and we’ll take him back as soon as they open. the vet have him painkillers and a shot of hydration. we have to feed him -by syringe- watery mashed pellets + water and massage his belly. we already fed him once and he’s accepting it. however, he looks so weak and unwell. I can’t bear the thought of loosing him. I really can’t, he has so much to life and enjoy yet!
I’m sorry I wrote so much, I’m such a mess. if you can send some good vibes for him, that’d be very appreciated. or any advice you may have about this. I shouldn’t have accepted to pet sit that bunny, Tambor would be well now.
I’m so sorry you and Tambor are dealing with this. But there’s no way to know if it’s because of the new bunny. Bunnies get stasis all the time. Don’t beat yourself up.
If he’s unwell tomorrow, I highly recommend asking the vet if she can do more sub Q fluids or even show you how to do it at home. Fluids are extremely important in this situation.
(((((Get Well Soon Tambor))))
Thank you! He looked very upset since she came and he had never had stasis before or even strange poos. That + the fact he’s moulting…
The vet will keep him for 18 hours starting tomorrow morning to feed him and give the the sub q fluids. She says that depending on how he responds we’ll see from there. The vet here is not expensive, so we don’t mind him staying longer if needed
I agree with LPT, it could be coincidental to Mimi being there. You can’t blame yourself. Luna has had stasis twice and I don’t blame myself…except for the very first time because it really was my fault (when I first brought her home I was giving her too many treats and seed covered sticks
).
I’m glad you decided to bring him home. Sometimes staying at the vet overnight stresses a bun out even more, which can make things harder. But of course, there are situations when they must stay there for a while. Did the vet give him a gut motility med? If he has a bunch of gas, you could give him simethicone to help break up the gas bubbles in his tummy. If he doesn’t seem better by tomorrow, additional sub q’s will definitely help.
Sending vibes! ((((Tambor))))
Thank you guys. Tambor is not improving… The vet’s is opening in 20 minutes, so we’re heading there now.
He’s eaten by syringe but hasn’t pooped at all. The last time was more than 12 hours ago
…
I have, probably, a silly question. If a bunny with g I stasis is not popping at all, is it good to syringe feed him? Wouldn’t this create further blockage in his belly because he cannot”exit” some of the food?
Sending some positive vibes to you and to Tambor some (((poop vibes)))!
Hmm as far as I remember reading about stasis, the syringe feeding is done in the hopes that as more food and water go through the guts, these would then stimulate the bunny’s guts and push the stagnant stuff along, eventually leading to it all coming out.
Many many vibes for (((((Tambor)))))
Please keep us posted. As LPT says, buns go into stasis all the time, so don’t beat yourself up.
If there’s a complete blockage you shouldn’t syringe food. If there is a partial blockage, it’s as Kurottabun says: You syringe very watery food in the hope that the tummy will start up again. But sub q fluids or even intravenous should be given for extra hydration.
Have you tried gas meds too?
Simethicone is sold as a gas drop for babies in most countries, and are really effective at breaking up gas. You can’t overdose on them, and they don’t effect other medications, so I would really recommend trying those. 1ml of the 40mg strength is the recommended starting point.
If he hasn’t pooped yet, make sure to tell the vet. I would personally ask for a gut motility drug (in addition to more sub-q’s), especially if the vet said there was minor blockage. If the vet thinks the blockage is small enough to make its way out of Tambor’s body, then the motility drug will help move the critical care along through his digestive system and hopefully push out the blockage as well.
((((Tambor))))
Dear all,
Thank you very much for all your wonderful messages and vibes. Tambor is feeling better! He has spent the whole day at the vet’s and we were called earlier on because he’s already popping and eating better. Actually, we went to see him and brought him more veggies, as he had already eaten them all on his own accord! He was moving around, eating and happy to see us
.
In the X-ray last night, I think the vet said that there was only gas and/or that the blockage was very mild. In addition to the regular pain meds and s q fluids she’s been giving him, he got belly massages. Apparently, that worked great and he was pooping already with her first massage! He loves being touched, the little rascal
. He even has a massage schedule pinned on his vet’s cage. I wish I had that for me!
We’re taking him home tonight. She’ll give us Critical Care to feed him + painkillers (she’ll explain that more clearly this afternoon).
I want to gift our vet some expensive and exotic holidays
, she truly is an angel!
So happy to hear that!!!! ![]()
Yay! That’s awesome
.
Together with Mimi’s owner (the bunny we were pet-sitting) we found her new home for the remaining 2 days. Tambor couln’t be happier, he has been running and binking around, and clicking his teeth more than ever.
He was super chill in the vet clinic, and he was in the same room as huge dogs and cats! But when it comes to his territory, he almost dies… :@. Bunnies! As you guys said, stasis is very common, but still so scary! I had never seen him like this and I panicked
.
Great news!!! That’s just lovely. A massage-schedule =) Practically a bunny spa!
