So I’m not super worried, but Bombur has been having the same symptoms of incontinence and dark brown urine that he was having before he was on the Oxibendazole. The Oxibendazole did wonders on him and in 2-3 weeks there was no more incontinence. He’s been off treatment since March 12. Is it possible for him to have needed be on the medicine for a bit longer? I know EC will never go away and all they can do is kill the spores. It just feels like he was “reinfected” again so quickly. I called my vet, and she isn’t in until tomorrow. The attending is supposed to call me back, but she always warns of life threatening things that need emergency vet care asap, so I’m not going to really listen to her. I’m just curious about how quickly he can show symptoms again or if he should’ve been on meds longer.

Did the vet discuss putting Asriel on the meds as well? I think I read of some instances where both the symptomatic and non-symptomatic bun were put on the EC meds at the same time to help reduce the chances of reinfection (not sure if this is the correct approach or not).

          ((((Bombur))))

I had actually called about that earlier in the month, and the attending said it wasn’t necessary and it would put unnecessary stress on Asriel’s system. She wouldn’t even relay my concerns to my actual vet. I’ll talk to her about it when she calls tomorrow. I know my vet mentioned it was transferred through urine spores, and if a bunny ingests it they can become infected. Bombur will sometimes pee on the floor, especially on hay, and I can’t always see it, and inevitably they eat it. So I’m guessing that’s how Bombur could have gotten reinfected. I just feel bad for the poor little guy. He’s always got something.

If it is EC, my guess is that Bombur wasn’t reinfected. Just that the medication knocked down the numbers enough that he was feeling better and his urine issues were under control. But maybe they weren’t knocked down enough (you are correct, they will never truly go away) for him to go into remission and the EC became active again.

As for Asriel, it doesn’t necessarily hurt to treat. But if he isn’t showing symptoms, then the vet would likely see no reason to treat for it. I believe there are documented cases where an asymptomatic, EC-positive rabbit lives with an EC-negative rabbit and there is no transmission. I believe they typically shed the spores shortly after the initial infection (i.e. when they were first exposed). So even is Asriel has EC in his body, that doesn’t mean he is actively shedding spores. Does that make sense?

Asriel is my little Ox. He’s never been sick, so I’m not worried about him at all. I mainly just want to get Bombur under control. I wonder how it became active again. My vet was saying something about how stress can usually reactivate it, but he hasn’t had anything stressful happen. About a week and a half ago we tried to change the position of their cages, and Bombur was stressed about that, but could it have triggered it again?

I feel like there’s so many unknowns with EC that it’s hard for anyone to find definite answers. Every bunny presents symptoms differently.

Bombur’s vet finally called back. She thinks he is indeed having a flare up of EC again, or that it just didn’t settle completely. We’ll be going in on Sunday to test his white blood cell count, and if that looks good he’ll be on his second round in 2 months of the Oxibendazole.

I’m a little worried if he’s still on this by May 5th because Hubs and I will be out of the country and a breeder will be watching the boys for a week and a half. I feel comfortable with the breeder, but I don’t know how she’d feel about me bringing a symptomatic EC bunny into her home with babies near by.

Would you feel comfortable calling the breeder after Sunday to bring her up to date with what is going on? If she is hesitant about watching Bombur, then at least it will give you a few weeks to find someone else to watch the boys.

I think I’ll do that. I was planning on telling her anyways when I brought them there in case he had a flare up during his stay. Poor little man can’t catch a break. He’s always got something going on with him. I’m surprised he made it to a year old xD
