My bunny literally choked on hay. She was drooling all over the floor and trying to get it out until I did the bunny heimlich. What do I do? I’m so scared, what if she chokes at night while I’m asleep. What if she die Why is she even choking?

Has your rabbit ever had an x-ray of the head? I know the molar trim was spurred by a pellet choking episode, but perhaps that wasn’t the issue (molar spur). How is your rabbits hydration? Lubrication of the mouth is important in all animals to help break down food in the mouth while going down.

It’s difficult to say if maybe you should cut the hay to be smaller, because the choking cause is uncertain…

So she choked again but I thinks its on the smaller leafy pieces. I’m only giving her long thick stems so she has to chew and cant accidentally try to swallow it. I’ll ask the vet about doing an x ray bc she hasn’t had one.

Dasher seems to drink normally, I’ve noticed a change in that but I have noticed that she likes to chew more. It seems obsessive somtimes.

Wick chews to himself as a result of his teeth misalignment, so the chewing could be indicative that something is askew with the mouth, but perhaps it’s not the surface teeth. Roots can grow inward, or maybe it’s something to do with the actual throat muscles. An x-ray would give a much clearer picture of what may be happening.

Im sorry your bun had to go through that! I really suggest a vet visit to figure out why this is happening all of a sudden.

                  Thanks Wick and Mikey

We’re calling the vet tomorrow to set up an appointment. Luckily I have not seen her choke since Sunday so I think she’ll be ok until she sees the vet and we figure out what’s wrong.

Hey just wanted to post an update on Dasher. I forgot what the condition is called but the cartilage that is supposed to block her lungs when she eats doesn’t close completely causing her to choke. Has anyone heard of this before? I’m not sure that anything can be done but Dasher is usually able to dislodge the food on her own and I’m prepared to help her if it gets really bad.
