Sooo i have been litter training for three months now, pretty much ever since i got him. And he was starting to get the hang of it, until the other day when i changed his litter box.

His new litter box is the “Ware: Lock-In-Litter” one, with a grate. He has to have this one because of his known habit of sitting in his own pee constantly. He stopped sitting in his litter box when i got the new one, but also he seems to not want to sit in it at all anymore.

He will jump on it, sit for a second, and then hop off again. But he poops everywhere and pees outside of the box as well. He did this before, but most of the droppings and urine would be inside the box instead of out. I still scoop the poop and put it inside the litter box, and wipe up the pee with a tissue and put it in his litter box as well.

Any advice for this problem? Should i just continue and stick with this litter box? Maybe he’ll give in and learn to like the litter box? Or should i get him a different kind of litter box with a grate? I’m out of ideas!

What if you got him a cat sized litter box and put his hay to one side? That could encourage him more. Back when they were babies, I used to have everything at their litter box. I had hay on one side, and pellets+water on the other side. I think that encouraged them to be lazy loafers though xD now they love to chill in the litter box

Yes, my bun Rain who was a baby dwarf rabbit when I got her outgrew that litter box in three weeks! I just use a plastic storage container that works just fine. They have high enough sides and are great for buns. Cheap and easy to use. Although if you do have a bigger bun you’ll want to use a cat sized box as A&B mentioned above.

I debated on getting him a cat litter box or making one from a storage container, but he would still be sitting/sleeping in his urine again so I decided that the lock-in-litter box would work better because it would get him away from his pee.

I also probably should have mentioned he is about 4 years old, and a dwarf mix. The jumbo sized litter box, which is the size i got, can easily fit two of him!

So size isn’t an issue with him, its plenty roomy! Its just him using his litter box but sitting in his pee or not using it and him pooping everywhere.

My boys have the same litter box and they’re Hollands, so they fit snugly in it too. I have to actually get Bombur a new litter box for the same issues, but his incontinence is caused by EC, and my vet said the incontinence could always be there and just go in phases. You could still use a cat box and put a grate on top. A lot of people I’ve seen use mesh for it and they sell litter box+screen sets here in the BB store. I used one when they were babes and it worked great. Asriel has a digging problem, so the grate is a neccessity.

I don’t think I saw it mentioned, but is your bun neutered? It’s really difficult to litter train a boy bun when they aren’t because of the hormones. You could try using a hay rack too, maybe. It keeps the food seperate from the mess at least. I agree with the grate and mesh idea, I’ve heard that those work perfectly for most buns.

Here’s a pic of a bun that uses it:

Yes he is neutered, and he has two hay racks in his cage. The other one was empty, i just moved his box to the opposite side because he was laying over there more often and filled the one that was over there. I think he just decided to pick a different corner!
