I just got this bunny her name is Peanut and when I went to go clip her nails, I noticed that I just couldn’t find her front nails!

I found the tip of her toes and there was no nail what so ever on her front feet, there was just this little red (guessing its a dried blood clot or scab or something) nub

I contacted her old owner asking if she got her declawed, and the owner said no, so now we are both wondering whats happening. Peanut is acting exactly like a normal bunny, jumping/ hopping fine, she doesn’t seem distressed at all, shes eating normal too, its the weirdest thing to me. and me and the old owner are trying to look up forums or anything similar and nothing is coming up!

I’ve noticed that Peanut does like to dig on fabric, like blankets and pillows (but not the carpet…?) so I don’t know

Her back feet and nails are still good, she has nails on all the back feet

        Please Help!!

Message me if you need pictures and I’ll try but it’s an impossible angle

They could have broken off. But it’s unusual that they would have all broken off. How old is she?

It sounds like she was declawed. Its not uncommon for rabbits to lose a nail or few from digging activities, but they usually grow back. To have all of them break off, it means the old owner let them grow so long they all snapped. Or, she had just an improper diet so they were all brittle and snapped.

Hi! If all of the front nails did break off (which as the others have suggested would be odd), I would keep an eye on the nails to make sure they do not show signs of infection.

Just another thought, I have heard of bunnies chewing off their own nails too. Have you seen her chewing at her paws or anything odd like that?

And does she have a dewclaw? (Its higher up than the other nails and on the inside of the front legs)

I’d check the paws for signs of infection for the next week or so. Some buns have very brittle nails. My Bam often loses one or two nails between nail clippings. It’s always on the fore paws because those nails are much thinner, but he has an old nail injury on one of his his hind leg where the nail always grows out crooked. So my guess is he just has brittle nails, like I have myself.

The durability of an animal’s claws (and human nails) is to the greatest part genetically determined, but more severe malnutrition can also make nails brittle.

I haven’t seen her do anything i would think that would be chewing of her nails, besides cleaning herself, I will keep a better look though,

and her dewclaws are the same as the other front nails, their isn’t one

Hi, I, too, have heard of bunnies chewing their own nails… it can be done if their nails had gone neglected for so long that they just decided to chew them down because they were in their way, or done out of stress and / or boredom. Either way, nail biting for buns is said to be quite uncommon.

I hope her nails come in nice and healthy…
