Hey guys , so i have a question. I’ve had my bunny for over 6 months now. He has a beautiful xpen and has adapted wonderfully to a routine. He sleeps in the cage during the day-cause no one is home at that time – and ranges free at night time for about 7 hours , however he still sleeps most of that time too. Now summer is around the corner and family members are complaining about how the heat will worsen his stay in the kitchen , with his litter and flies and so on. We decided to place him on the roof of our building and so i’ll be able to check in whenever i want and bring him down during the day. Do you think he’ll be okay up at night alone? I will of course shade the cage , make sure it’s big enough for him to roam , enough food , two litter boxes , hay , water bottles , and a fan if managable. What do you guys think?.

Could you elaborate more about that “on the roof”? ò_O

I’m assuming by roof they mean the attic, but I might just be an optimist.

Well it does say ‘shade the hutch’, which implies it will be outside in sunlight…

I would have thought the roof would be far hotter than the kitchen. If you clean his litter box every day it shouldn’t attract flies. You could also get a fly screen for the kitchen door.

Yes, more information needed. Where do you live? Both location and what type of home? And how big of a cage do you think is big enough for him to roam? And the fan may or may not help depending on the environment. The fan can help circulate air but fans most directly benefit mammals that sweat. Rabbits don’t, they dissipate their heat through their ears.  Definitely more detailed information needed.

Could you please explain more about having your rabbit on the roof please? For us to give you better and more helpful responds, we need more information from you. Cause to me, it sounds odd to have a bunny on a roof. And you also mentioned he is in his cage all day and goes out at night only. Sounds like your bun isn’t socializing at all which is not good. Most rabbits love to have company and be surrounded by their owner. Again, please give us more information on the roof thing and about the time your spending with your rabbit.

While we wait, as a general rule: don’t put animals in the attic or on roof terraces:
1 – hot air goes upwards so the attic would be literally an oven (K and I live in an attic apartment and we survive thanks to insulation+A/C+ice packs)
2 – don’t leave pray animals unattended outside, and more importantly don’t keep them outside in extreme weathers, unless you’re willing to spend good money to create an insulated and secure set-up
