I saw that one of my rabbits eyes were closed and wanted to further investigate, and then saw that there was matted fur around his eye. I realized there was a small piece of hay in his eye and removed it. He is still acting normal, playing, licking, and eating. Though I removed the hay, I’m still very concerned. Should I wait a day for his eye to open back up or take him to the vet immediately?

Can you rinse it with a bit of saline?

I would wipe around his eye gently with a damp cloth, and try to flush it a bit with clean saline. If he is still holding it shut after that he may have a scratch on his eye from it, and you should take him to the vet. The vet can put special dye on his eye and see if there are any scratches, and prescribe drops if there are to prevent infection.

I had this exact concern once with one of my bunnies. Turns out he didn’t have a scratch, but the vet visit was easy and I was glad to know he was ok!
