I have two rabbits that have lived together for over a year now. An intact female, and a neutered male. Unfortunately, my boy Charlie has been very sick and after many many treatments and vet visits, the doctor has said there is nothing else to do but spend a little time with him and let him go. This has been so hard to go through. I’m worried about my girl Tega being lonely and I want to get her a new companion. She isn’t spayed and I kind of like the idea of letting her be a mama at least once in her life. I understand that with babies it’s hard to tell the gender. Should I get a baby? Should I look for an adult? She is one year and two months old. Once they are bonded can I keep them together? I’ve heard a lot of mixed things about this. Is this a horrible idea? Should I just get her spayed? I love her personality and I worry that spaying would change her. Help!

The subject of intentional breeding is banned from this forum. That said, rabbits don’t see ‘having a family’ like we do. So if she had babies, you would still have to separate them from her when they got to around 10 weeks old, spay and neuter, then rebond them. You would also need to commit to finding up to 10 suitable homes, as rabbits can have large litters.

It’s really important to get female rabbits spayed as they have very high rates of uterine cancer when unspayed. Spaying doesn’t change their personality.

Most people would recommend that both rabbits be spayed and neutered before bonding.

I’ve heard that in a lot of instances bunnies don’t really take well to motherhood either and even when they are doing this correctly they only visit the babies in the nest twice in a day to feed, so the idea of ‘family’ life doesn’t exist and they get no joy from reproducing. Your just likely to put your female through a stressful ordeal. I have seen some horror stories on here of bunnies that have had litters and the babies die or the mum is poorly etc. Have a search and see for yourself. I don’t want to scare you or be rude but it’s just completely unnecessary and a bit naive to want to bring more bunnies in to the world just because you like the idea. You very well could find yourself overwhelmed with too many rabbits. Just get her spayed and enjoy her knowing she can live her life happily
