I got Luna these long willow branch sticks, and noticed that some of them have a tiny beige/white piece of fuzz sticking out of the part of the branch where the twigs were cut off. I read online that there is a willow called Fuzzy Willow, that has some white fuzzy buds on the branches. Is this normal, or should I throw the branches out?

Where did you get the branches? (I’m only asking in case you are trying to identify a wild tree that you harvested from yourself). Willows are flowering trees, but their flower structure looks more like a puff/fuzz than what we think of as a pretty flower. My guess is that this is what you are seeing. In my area, what we call “pussy willows” are sometimes cut for their ornamental fuzzy catkins.

Does anyone here know if all willow species are safe for rabbits, or only certain species? It can be tricky for a non-botanist to identify Salix sp.

The branches were a gift, but they are commercially sold. I too was wondering if all willow species are safe?

From what I’ve read, all species of willow are safe, but they vary in palatability. Meaning buns might not eat all kinds. Bam is very particular about willow, it must be weeping willow or a certain type of sallow or he won’t have anything to do with it. There are many different kinds growing here, so I’ve tried quite a few.

Thanks OB and Bam! She really wanted these willow sticks (even though she never touched the willow rings I had bought her in the past), so I felt bad when I took the sticks away from her until I found a definite answer. I’m glad I can give them back to her .

Hahaha, nothing like trying to keep something away from a bun to make it desirable.

This is good to know. If I am able to move to a place with my own yard, I want to plant a native willow for the birds and for my rabbit’s enjoyment.

That’s a nice idea OB . Also, you’re so right about buns wanting things they can’t have…when I tried to give the sticks back to Luna she was like “meh” and sniffed it and hopped away .
