        Hey guys!

I’m sure this is probably normal but good to check

Sam used to be on timothy hay & his poops were pretty large & light coloured. Because of allergies, I switched hays & he’s now predominantly eating oat (usually with a sprinkle of dandelion, plantain or camomile flowers – I found out that peppermint leaves makes his pee pink!). He’s still pooping as much as ever haha, but they’re definitely smaller, darker and denser than before.

Have others experienced this, and any advice?

        Thank you!

My boys have the same issue when they have oat hay. I just assumed it was normal, so I never asked. I’m interested to see if someone has an explanation though.

Generally I see that as a consequence of less hay fiber consumption, which may make sense because many rabbits do tend to eat less of oat hay stems than the seed bits. That’s just my guess though. Wick’s been off oat hay for a long time since he would only eat mainly seeds when given.

Great point @Wick, and yes that’s true – Sam definitely prefers the seed heads.

He liked the orchard grass too, the cut I have is a soft consistent texture though with barely any hard stalky bits so maybe that’s why ;p such a picky bun!!

He gets one Fibafirst stick every day too (https://supremepetfoods.com/fiba-first-2/) ingredients: timothy hay, alfalfa stalks, wheat meal, soybean meal, ground peas, locust bean meal, alfalfa protein extract, flaked oats, linseed, soya oil. Goes absolutely crazy for them! I remember reading that Vienna gives hers seven each a day (?!)

The only other hay I haven’t given him yet is meadow, which is half the price of orchard ;p so will perhaps try those.

Interested to hear other’s opinions too

I also notice that with Ophelia eating oat hay. Wick’s explanation makes a lot of sense, because Ophelia will literally pick out the seed heads and eat almost none of the stalks, so she’s getting less fiber. Of course, as long as the poops are still uniform and not misshapen, chalk it up to his being picky and shorting himself on fiber

Interesting! I will try offering other types of hay too then until we can find a compromise…

Nice to see you back here BunNoob!
