I’ve noticed that over the last couple weeks Mr Buns has had gas and stasis about two times now. Last time I gave him drops and gut mobility drug and he was back to his normal self within minutes. Last night I saw the symptoms return, so I gave the gas drops and gut mobility drops but he didn’t bounce back as quickly. He did eat some veggies but not all and he has normal poops showing. He still isn’t interested in his treats which he normally is so excited for. Vet visit is being arranged ASAP. Right now I am grieving the loss of my dog who we had to say goodbye to last week. There have been lots of tears and it’s been a very stressful last 3 months with losing Cinni (rabbits) in January, getting Petunia who he is seperated from but wants to be with until spayed and healed, and now My muffy(dog) passing and me being a complete emotional disaster. Do you think this could be the cause of the stasis? Or could it be Petunia and the high hormonal output she is giving off? She is desperate to mate with him and I feel like he is lonely too missing Cinni. I’m hoping he can just hang in there but I’m having no luck with animals right now. And advice and support appreciated. I can’t lose a third animal this year, I just can’t. mr Buns is a Nee Zealand White and I was told he is about 5 or 6 I’m not sure as he was a rescue from the humane society so I’m not sure if she is even a factor here. Thanks
Stress can trigger stasis. The source of the stress could be if he is missing Cinni and wants to be with Petunia. He could even be reacting to your emotions if you are super stressed. That’s what happened with Luna and I last time she had stasis. Have you tried probiotics? They can really help to right a bun’s tummy by bringing the natural gut flora back in balance. (Note: Probiotics will not reverse the symptoms of a bun already in stasis.)
What kind of probiotics should i use? I have not tried them before but I am giving him Metina(gut flow) and Smithecone. It looks like he is drinking but I have not see him eat- when should I start giving critical care? He is moving around and stretching out showing his feet so he looks more comfortable. Where do I find probiotics?
Have you given him any different vegetables? I imagine you would have said but it’s worth checking! I think cabbage triggered stasis in Luna.
Have you taken him to the vet? I think its worth taking him to the vet before force feeding if possible (*obviously if its overnight where you are and the vet won’t be open for 12 hours then disregard*), so that they can check there’s no physical blockage. I also found that the SubQ fluids and injected pain meds really perked Luna up when I took her to the vet, more so that meds via the mouth.
I use Protexin which is a probiotic pellet. Buttercup has had stasis three times between Jan and May 2017. This is the longest she’s gone without stasis so I’m really pleased. I can’t say it’s all down to the probiotic but I’m sure it’s helped keep her tummy more stable.
Siruis and Luna- I have not given anything new since the night before. He did however get into the closet and go to town on the Yesterday’s New litter bag-he has a weird obsession with shredding it which I do not let him do so I am not sure if he maybe ingested a piece and has a blockage but he shouldnt be able to poop no? After I gave him the first set of gas drops and gut mobility drug he started pooping because at about 5 in the morning there were his regular “poop wars” poo balls on the floors and he had eat some of his veggies. Another thing is, I have been taking Petunia downstairs for excercise time and I take down all the fencing so Mr Buns has the entire room to run and exercise and observe Petunia’s scent. She had figured out how to get back to her room on her own so I had followed prepared to throw the separation fence back together as I have been doing. They came in contact with each other- no fighting just grooming and then her wanting to mate which I intervened and put her back but could me taking her away from him have caused this?
Ah ok, that’s great that he has done some poops – that does mean that there isn’t a blockage.
Stress can cause stasis, but I don’t think separating unbonded bunnies would be that stressful to them. Perhaps her humping him/wanting to mate made him stressed, but I wouldn’t think it would cause stasis levels of stress. Perhaps it’s a combination of factors.
When was the last time he ate?
It would have been sometime in the morning very early- maybe 5am? I havent seen him eat- I only know that he ate because a large portion of his veggies were eaten and he had poos on the floor. I did see him take a drink not too long ago. Should I pickup up some baby food and make him try to eat that? he HATES being forced to do anything- take medication ect. I can only imagine what a joy force feeding is going to be.
How many hours ago was that? (I’m in the UK and 5am was 10 hours ago, but if you’re somewhere in America and it was only a couple of hours ago, I think that’s fine).
I think if it’s over 6 hours you should probably force feed (to me, that seems like a good amount of time where it’s not got toooo serious, but also hes obviously not eating by himself. I’m not sure what official recommendations on timing would be). But, I would try tempting foods first, and even maybe leaving a plate of pellet mash/baby food/mashed banana that he could eat if he chose. Do you have critical care? I would be wary of feeding him too much sugary baby food – its good to mix it in with a pellet mash or critical care, as the overload of sugar could worsen stasis if they’re not used to it.
That’s what afraid of – we are going on 7 hours if it was 5 am. I have critical care and will give to him as soon as I get home- unfortunately I am work but I am watching him on the nanny cam to see his habits. He has moved around some- I had to stop watching to take a call and when I went back on he was lying stretched out with his feet kicked out by his food bowl so I may have missed him taking a bite. Unfortunately Mr Buns is not very active during the day on a good day- he sleeps. He is under his hidey box which is not normal for him so I suspect something is still wrong. I am having such a hard time staying positive after everything that has happenned. I truly worry he has a broken heart.
UPDATE- just saw him have a big drink and munch on some veggies- I’m going to still take him to the vets tomorrow. I think the grief and all the upset and negative energy from me is having an effect. I’m not sure what else could be the cause.
That’s great news!
There isn’t always an obvious cause of stasis, so don’t blame yourself. Have his teeth been checked recently?
You might also be over-worrying – eg, whenever I spend a day at home with my bunnies i’m always alarmed by how lazy they are during the day, but I don’t normally see them during those hours.
Thank you S&L-He just ate some hay and groomed himself for about 10 minutes. It is probably all of the above, worrying and stress- I gave him belly rubs too and his tummy was quite tight but I believe his environment is the cause- I probably scared him with my loud crying(unfortunately there is no pretty soft and gentle crying when I have an episode where I am grieving for the dog) and I think Petunia is so high energy which is a COMPLETE opposite to what he was used to with 13 yrs old Cinni who was the most laid back bun of all time- she made Mr Bun seem like the high strung one now Petunia makes him appear to be the laid back one. I’m hoping this does not happen while I am on vacation :S Thank you S&L for all of your support I really appreciate it so very much as this has helped get me through.
Great that he’s eating hay too – sounds like he’s on the way to normal behaviour
No worries at all
and I’m sorry for the loss of your dog
it’s always heartbreaking and I can’t imagine losing two pets in such a short time. Having two separated rabbits is always extra high stress too, so don’t be hard on yourself! Give yourself a break too.
Hopefully Petunia will calm down a bit once she’s spayed too
it sounds like Mr Bun is ready to be friends, so hopefully you’ll have an easy bond.
Thanks so much S&L, its been very tough and having them separated has been so hard- considering Petunia is like a little Houdini and when she wants out she WANTS OUT if you know what I mean….we’ve got 2 weeks until spay and then recovery so I’m hoping he will be okay- I think are going to bond quite quickly myself.
I’m glad Mr Buns is ok
. Don’t worry, if his tummy was upset from stress, it sounds like it was quickly righted with the simethicone and tummy rubs you gave him. You’re doing the right thing by keeping them separated until she is spayed, and in the meantime he still gets to see and smell her, so he’ll be ok while he is waiting. And he has his loving mom taking care of him too! ![]()
Thanks Luna
he is definitely back to his old self eating and drinking and exploring? I really hope this is the end of stasis for a while!!! I found his poop that I guess got backed up so I guess he felt better once he passed it. Just gotta make it through 4 more weeks!
