what do you all use for a hay feeder? HP has a wooden hay rack with horizontal wooden bars plus a large pile of hay in the corner of his litter box, he is only 10 weeks old and seems to have some diffuculty with the hay rack, I’m not sure if I should replace it with a plastic and metal one with vertical bars or just put all his hay in his litterbox. thoughts?

Wick just gets hay in a pile in his litter box

when you clean his box out, do you throw out the clean uneaten hay or save it

Most of it I save, throw in his hay box, mix around with fresh hay, and throw back in the box. Since it’s pushed to one side of the box, he typically doesn’t pee on it though there are exceptions. Generally I don’t waste much hay via it being soiled.

It is more natural for them to get hay served on the floor/ in the litter box, and that can make them eat more. Hay racks are mostly convenient for the humans. Although buns are pretty clever at undoing the convenience by pulling out all the hay from the hayrack =)

I don’t use hay racks. I just put it in one side of each litter box. Unlike Wick though, mine are messy and do soil on it so I do have a bit of waste!

I am endlessly seeking a good hay solution. I’ve tried various racks but they tend to just pull it out then trample on it. Like Sarah, if I put it in the litter box, it gets peed on pretty quickly.

I would experiment with just putting in on the side of the litterbox, and see how he does with it

I have a GREAT solution I bought this BIG steel bowl and fill it with hay the racks would just make a mess there was hay all over the floor this way he can just sit either on the floor of his cage or in his litter box and eat it. and its less messy. try it it worked wonder for me. and no mess on the floor.

I’ve tried bowls and wooden boxes too, but my little bunnies just sit in the bowl/box and pee and poop in it while they eat! I’m glad it works for you though!

Ha! Buttercup does exactly the same. Even with a box/container that is way too small for her big fluffy butt – she’d still squish in it and poop!

I did have some success with just putting a big ole pile of hay on a mat on the floor. It worked well, until they gradually stopped pooping in their litter boxes. So I’ve gone back to hay in the litter trays! A bit more waste this way but 96% of poops are where they are supposed to be!

Haha pile of hay on the floor is my current trick for Nimbus and Atlas. Luna is good, I think cos her bum is too big to squish into most things But Atlas and Nimbus both sit in ANYTHING I try. I was thinking about trying one of those cardboard magazine holder type things… I’ll let you know how that one goes

I’m a member of the “hay in the litterbox” club too, lol – I tried hay racks and hay boxes and hay bags and all manner of “hay things”…none of it worked for us, lol. If the hay is in ANYTHING other than the litterbox, they pull it out and fling it everywhere. If it’s in the box, they just eat it. It helps that I don’t use a regular litterbox either, I have a decent sized little rubbermaid bin (one of those under the bed, shallow ones) and half of it has litter, the other half has hay on sawdust. so the sawdust soaks up anything that may leak over to the hay side, and I don’t loose much hay because of it getting soiled.

Oooh a magazine holder. Good luck! I bought a wooden bottle holder type thing from Hobby craft which would have worked wonderfully as a hay rack and look nice too but of course, Buttercup jumped right in, nested her lil butt, pooped and then Peanut couldn’t get to the hay at all

When the boys were first with us, I had the hay in the litter box, which worked great for a week, then the started peeing on it. So, I decided to have one box designated for litter and another designated for hay, and they would sit in the hay one and pee all through it. *sigh* They have a hayrack that can go either inside or outside the cage. At first I had it inside, but Bombur would pull it all out and pee in it, and Asriel would just pull it out. It’s now on the outside of the cages, and they rattle the cages constantly trying to get it out, and Asriel has still found a way to make a mess. I’m really not a fan of the rack being on the outside facing in, but it’s like the least messy solution. I’d love to get them cat litter boxes and try putting the hay on one side again, but Asriel will dig out anything without a grate.

I use a smaller version of this hay ball for Bindi which I clip right above the litter box. It seems to help some of the hay wasting. Elara doesn’t have one and I don’t think I will get her one. I worry about things like this with young, energetic buns. Scared of them getting caught in it, somehow.

I’ve tried a few different types, along with putting their hay straight in the litter box. So far, mine and the bunny’s favorite is a wire trash can with big holes (big enough to get hay from, not big enough to put their heads through.) and a wire storage basket, again with wires big enough just to get hay through. It’s the least wasteful at the moment.

This one fascinates me! I think I might try this out with Cheeni and Chai.
