My rabbit got neutered last thursday, but she is not acting like she used to. She never leaves her cage anymore, I have placed bankets on the ground so it’s “safe” for her to go outside, but she is just chilling in her toilet all day long? Before the neutering it usually took her 1-2 hours till she finally left the cage, but now I can have her cage open all day and she doesn’t leave it. Does anyone have any experience or an explanation to why she is acting this way?

Im planning to take her to the vet in two weeks, at the same time my other rabbit will get neutered as well.

To clarify, your rabbit is a female, correct? A female rabbit is spayed, while a male rabbit is neutered. Recovery from a neuter is typically very quick, while spays, being more invasive, have a longer recovery time.

Can you provide details on her eating/pooping recently?

She could still be in pain from the surgery. Any pain signs? Did you administer pain medication/were you provided with any? Any odd visuals by the incision site?

Yes, I meant spayed. Her poops are the same size and consistency as before the procedure. She has normal eating habits(fed her critical care in the mean time), it did take a couple of days before she started eating like normal and now she enjoys both pellets and her greens.

The vet did give me a prescription to metacam with I gave her for three days, it doesn’t look like she is in any pain by the way she’s laying down. I would assume that if the pain was present that she would grind her teeth and lay down with her paws close to her body, if the makes any sense. The incision looks normal, she doesn’t bother licking or biting on it.

It’s great that she’s eating and the incision looks good. I’m not experienced with spay recovery and the timeline, but it seems she’s well on her way. She may be sore still and hesitant to move perhaps.

Hopefully someone else can chime in about how this sounds! Since she’s eating and pooping though, she should be out of the woods.

I hope she is just recovering and is just still a bit sore. But two days ago she kept jumping on my bed and back on the floor acting quite normal, either way I’ll find out if she is sick or her joints are hurting from being a cage rabbit, I’m not sure how good her last owners took care of her.

I would imagine she is just sore still- as long as bunny is eating and drinking just give her quiet time and let her do as she pleases. I have spayed 2 females and about to do a 3rd on April 4th- they tend to be pretty quiet as it takes a lot of out of them. Just keep an eye on her and give lots of love.
