I have 2 lops who are 3 and 4, I’m an animal lover always have been and my priority with my buns is always the best of care. I live in Australia and here in one state rabbits are illegal. We had to move here temporarily for work and are moving in a couple of weeks. Next door to us happens to have a rabbit also. I’ve baby sat for a few days once. I’m concerned about their bun, the woman who owns it has young children who are pretty rough with her; chasing, picking up and grabbing incorrectly. I’ve noticed they don’t really feed her Hay mostly a store bought “rabbit mix” and rarely greens, she feels a bit to boney and hates being touched. And she’s kept outside permanently, rain hale or shine with no cover other that a small hutch at ground level. Because they are illegal in this state I’m not able to report it. It’s really bothering me but I’m. It not sure if I’m over reacting. Can a bun be happy outside all the time, does heavy rain bother a bun? Am I being silly and should I just leave it alone?

I think you should have a serious discussion with your neighbor because your instinct is correct. Those are terrible condition for a rabbit. A rabbit getting wet is very dangerous. Once following one if Wick’s routine molar grindings, a new vet assistant was tasked to syringe feed Wick and the assistant got Critical Care all over him, so a wet paper towel was used to wipe his head. He was shaking so much from how cold he became I had to wrap him in my scarf for the ride home! I can’t imagine what a rabbit in the rain would experience.

I live in Australia also and am aware of your concerns. I once thought about moving to Qld myself but didn’t because of my bunny.

Your concerns about that poor bunny are not silly, its actually very disturbing a rabbit has to survive in those conditions. Its really dreadful.

If you can talk to your neighbour please try. But you know what? Anyone who treats a bunny like that is unlikely to change their behaviour. Thats what
makes this so difficult. And so heartbreaking.

I am fully aware that reporting animal cruelty should be an option but I am sure you know what the authorities would do to a rabbit if ‘arrested’ in Qld.

Try your best and I sincerely thank you for your concern about that poor little rabbit. This may not have a good outcome but at least that bunny met one person who cared about her.

            Good luck!

            xx

Sad situation for sure. I would try to talk to the neighbour about your concerns and offer tips to take better care of their bunny. That’s really probably all you can do.

Unfortunately she’s not receptive to advice and she doesn’t seem to care, I just think it’s the mind set of it’s just a rabbit. I’ll try again before we move away. It just breaks my heart, every time I hear it rain or think about the poor thing. Unfortunately for me I find it hard to let stuff like this ago especially if it’s about an animal. My partner has even suggested straight up kidnapping haha. Maybe before we leave I’ll just offer to take her although I doubt that will go down well. Thanks for replays, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t over reacting just because I love my own buns so much.

Not gunna lie, I’d steal the rabbit and make it look like a predator got into the hutch

I would really consider what your partner and Sarah are suggesting. But at the same time, if she knows youre the one who did it, you will easily get your buns taken away from you, so its very risky. I would try to persuade her to take her rabbit. You can try to frame it around her having more time and money to spend on her kids. Worst case, as a last ditch effort, you can offer to buy her bun.
