So i adopted Onyx and the shelter was very broad with his age. Saying 1-5 years old, but we think hes around 3-4 years. He is a dwarf of some kind, super cute but reserved and probably scared a lot out of habit.

When i adopted him he was very underweight, and he was very sick. Now he’s chubby, not super chubby but a more appropriate weight, and he is mostly healed! But he doesn’t seem happy! He likes to be snuggled but not held, he has toys in his cage that he’ll play with occasionally too.

Basically i want to know what i can do to make him happier, and for him to warm up to me more. When i put my hand in the cage he bows and comes up to me, so i know he likes me. But my dream is to see him binky! Any tips would be helpful, thank you!

Most bunnies don’t really play with toys. My bunnies’ favourite ‘toys’ are cardboard boxes with holes cut in them for them to jump on and hide in, and chew toys like willow balls, apple twigs, or willow tunnels. You can also do things like hide treats in toilet roll tubes stuffed with hay, and make digging boxes with shredded paper and treats hidden in them.

The best way for him to bond with you is if you spend time on his level. So sit on the floor and read a book, and eventually he’ll be curious enough to come up and see what you’re doing.

As for binkies, what’s your floor like? Bunnies find it difficult to get a grip on wooden or tile floors, so putting down a rug might help

Thanks for responding! I have one toy in there that i bought, and the other is made of toilet paper rolls. He doesn’t pay much mind to the toilet paper ones that i make , and likes the ball i bought best as i hear him in the middle of the night throwing it about!

I will definitely try getting on his level more, that’s a great idea!

The floor he runs around on is in my kitchen, which is tile, but we have a rug in there that we put our bunnies on. I have a bonded pair living in the same house and they have free roam of the back of our kitchen (bunny proofed of course!), as they are both twice the size of Onyx.

He runs around with our female and our guinea pig who thinks he’s a bunny.
