How often should I be changing the bedding in the litter tray? My bunny goes in the litter tray, but he digs through the tray sometimes, so the soiled bedding mixes with the clean ones. It seems like a waste to replace all the bedding at the end of the day. Can I just lay clean ones on top? Is he ok to sit on soiled ones? How often should I change the bedding?

          Hi Chestnutbun
Welcome to the forums. : )

What type of litter are you using? If your bun is digging in it, you might like to try using a screen over the litter to prevent that. Some years ago, things like cake cooling racks were suggested. With this, the urine goes right through and most of the poop falls through also. But you can use things like the litter screen that the Binky Bunny store sells that allows you to separate the poop from the litter. Then you only need scoop out the wet litter. There is a video with the product info that demonstrates how it is used.

How often you change litter depends on what type you use and personal preference really. By using a screen, you’ll find you wont have to do a full litterbox clean-out as often.

How often should I change the bedding?

What type of bedding is it? Do you mean a paper or wood product? If you’re using what is sold as small animal bedding in the rest of his cage, you could do away with that all together. It helps them use the litter box more reliably when they don’t have bedding lining the cage. It’s also not necessary for a house rabbit.

            Thanks for your response!

It’s the paper product, I only put the bedding in his litter box and he uses it 99.9% of the time.
