I tried to condense this title but it was difficult. On Tuesday, Lukie- 3yr old neutered dwarf- got his 2nd molar spur trim. I thought the vet used a Dremel drill but heard him refer to clipping, which scares me because that can crack teeth. Anyway, all went well, and Luke recovered much more quickly than the 1st time. I stopped all pain & motility meds on Thursday and he did fine
Poops were getting bigger, he was eating his greens and hay like a champ. Still not much for pellets which he normally devours.Last night he was playing in,his new Cottontail Maze, having a great time, and really enjoying his hay. It was so great to see. Then he lay down and began grooming himself really vigorously, like maybe something was bothering him. I thought maybe he got ear mites at the vets. I went and made his salad and banana slice, and he ate his banana more slowly than normal and when he went to eat his greens, he tilted his head up and to the left and seemed to be struggling to chew and swallow them. I went to bed shortly after feeling a bit concerned. When I got up, I noticed he hadn’t eaten his hay or pooped all night. I have him his greens and banana and same thing as last night, less tilting back of the head but obvious trouble swallowing. The vet who did his molar trim Is closed, but I have another trustworthy vet who agreed to see him. He found nothing abnormal- no cracked molars (my fear!) or anything stuck in his mouth. Said he glimpsed a small sore on the side of Luke’s tongue, but it was so smAll that when he went to look again at it, he couldn’t find it. The vet gave us some meloxicam and told us to call the regular vet Monday.

Has anyone had this happen to their bunny after seemingly recovering perfectly from a molar trim? My only thought is that mane he had a sore on his tongue from the spurs and when he was eating the coarser hay, it reopened. I feel so badly for him, and I’m not looking forward to more days of syringe feeding either ?. Thanks for any thoughts or experiences with this.

It could be a sore from a nick on the tongue. The only instance Wick didn’t recover 100% was when we suspect the grinding aggravated a dormant/growing tooth infection. We put him on antibiotics for a month to essentially treat this invisible tooth infection as it grew out of his tooth (never saw it), but Wick went back to normal during the treatment.

I’d say take a glance in his mouth every day just to make sure there’s no blood or apparent changes. It may alleviate itself, but if it continues, discuss a more exploratory examination again.

Thanks so much, Wick. I’d forgotten about Wick’s infected tooth! Great that the infection was treatable simply with antibiotics and not more invasive means.

Luke was FINE last night- eating hay, playing, etc. This morning? Won’t even finish banana and won’t look at anything else. I’m giving him more pain meds and syringe feeding him, much a he hates it. I just don’t get it! Will keep you updated- thanks for always being so helpful, Wick ☺.
