Tonight I noticed a scab on the back of one of my buns, Bun Snow. When I adopted him I was told they had to shave the back of his neck due to matting from the previous owner. (Bun Snow has thick wooly hair all over so it mattes easily and has to be brushed very often.) The hair hasn’t really grown back and I adopted him about 7 months ago when he was about 8-10 weeks old. Tonight I found a scab in this bald spot in-between his shoulder blades. I will include pictures for reference.

Bun Snow is a completely indoor bun. He has two bun brothers (also indoor buns) who are separate from him as they don’t get along very well so they just stare at each other through their pens. He’s eating, drinking, and pooping completely normal. Nothing seems out of the ordinary other than this scab.

I’m just looking for some insight before I make the trip to the vet as I’ve read a lot about mites and ring worm.

        Thanks!!

It looks like a scabbed over wound. It doesn’t really look like fur mites generally do, the surrounding skin is so smooth and there’s no dandruff. Three things indicate that it could perhaps still be fur mites: That he hasn’t been bit by another bun, the location of the scab at the nape of the neck and the fact that the hair hasn’t grown back in 7 months.

If you scrape very gently on the scab with a q tip or the rounded back end of a plastic tooth stick, do you see skin flakes (dandruff like) then? Does the scab seem painful if you touch it?

Fur mites are easily remedied with Revolution (selamectin) or ivermectin. Both these antiparasitics are prescription only unless you’re in Australia.

Warning that we always issue when skin parasites are discussed: Never use any compound containing fipronil on rabbits. Fipronil is sold OTC under a variety of names, it’s safe for cats and dogs, but it’s deadly toxic to rabbits.

Are you in the US? It almost looks like a scab from an injection site.

He didn’t flinch or anything when I touched it. The edges of the scab flake off and that’s about it. :/

I am in the US and he hasn’t had any injections since I got him.

Hmm, the only other thing I can think of then is an old wound where his hair was pulled out. Maybe one of the other buns did it. You said they don’t get along.

I would also agree it could be a scab from any needles. My bun had the same thing, I actually posted it on this forum a year ago before finding out it was necrosis. This picture looks just like my rabbit’s necrosis once the flappy part of the scab fell off (by itself) which took a week or so after noticing the patch.
Since your rabbit hasnt had any needles near him, then it is probably just from a wound.
Is there anything that he could be hitting his back on? Like a wood hut or what not?

I suppose that’s possible. Whenever he goes near the other buns pen one of them tries to lunge at him, so maybe he got nipped through the bars some how? He’s never actually been near them without something dividing them from each other:

Nothing comes to mind that he would’ve been injured from. I did have a vegetable basket with a bell attached hanging above his pen (I took it out this morning just in case) maybe somehow that got him? It’s not sharp or anything though. He loves to constantly flop and lay down. Maybe a blunt piece of hay poked him?

I’m just trying to think of anything he could’ve gotten into…
