Took Marley into an exotic animal vet, had an Xray done, turns out no broken bones, but besides the infection [which is in the bone] it looks like he’s developing rabbit osteoporosis in both legs. Trying out pain meds and a different antibiotic now. going to go back in 10 days.

        ******************Old*************
the main thing right now is deciding if i should put Marley down or not.

he’s currently unable to use his back right leg [probably a broken bone, for sure infection [is on antibiotics]], just hops only uses his left, doesn’t really slow him down much, he does lay down in corners more often than out in the open now. He eats about the same, a bit less, used to be 2 servings of pellets probably about 1.5 servings pellets now each day [with as much hey as he wants]. will still come out and ask for head petting, and if you have treats [carrot peelings] will activity climb you for them if you’re sitting down.

so he’s somewhat active and eating, but i know rabbits hide their injuries to the best of their ability. [do note that Marley is about 13 years old].

So people does he sound well enough to let him keep going, or is he in too much pain and just hiding it and should be put down?

just looking to hear some other opinions i know what way i’m leaning, more info below if you want it.

        Summery of events

Its about 2 month since this began.

I noticed that he had poop encrusted on his foot so i soaked it and washed it off, and with it a layer of skin cam off, i kept it bandaged.

1.5  weeks later i take a look at the foot and see minor swelling, soak it and blood drain out of it, at this point i called a vet. decided to give it a week and wrapped the foot.

Took the rabbit into the vet where they pointed out he started to have reduced mobility in the leg like something was blocking it. [put him on antibotics] [vet we saw was not our normal vet, didn’t seem to know that much about rabbits] the vet techs who latter wraped his foot, the first wrapped it so the bandage slid right of the second ended up wraping it too tight that when i check on him the next morning his foot swelled up to 2-3 times its normal size.

[messaged and soaked the foot and went back to normal size]

so its now about 3.5 weeks after the vet visit i have puss draining from the foot, and a rabbit that has learned to remove vet wrap, and what appears to be a small cylinder of bone [1/6-1/4 inch long] that broke off but not puncturing anything. [bone breaking i think was from him struggling to get loose while attempting to wrap his foot]

so now if i wrap the foot loose but secure he pulls the bandage off, if i wrap it tight enough to prevent him from pulling it off the foot will start swelling again, not as badly as when the vet tech did it but noticeable after a day.

This doesn’t sound like a cause to put the rabbit down — more of a cause to find a rabbit savvy vet. The leg sounds infected if there is puss present. Dose he have any ulcers, or lesions on that leg / foot?

I would strongly suggest calling round all your local vets and finding one that has a lot of experience treating rabbits.

He doesn’t sound like he’s in pain if he’s eating normally, climbing over you and exploring.

It sounds like his foot is infected, so he probably needs painkillers and antibiotics for that, but I agree with Emma, I think you need a rabbit savvy vet and different treatment before considering euthanasia.

I always like linking people to http://www.instagram.com/agirlnamedcharles/ because it shows how, with some learning and commitment, some rabbits who seem in the worst conditions actually can overcome them and be very happy. I think in both your case and ChiChi’s, the back leg issue is something which can be overcome with correct treatment.
