        Hello!
So, my bunny is about two or three years old, and she hates being picked up.
I don’t know if this is normal behavior for bunnies, because even though I’ve owned it do a few years now, she’s only my first rabbit.
Whenever I try to pick her up, she wiggles her legs, scratches me, and even today she bit me for the first time since she was only a couple months old (although it didn’t hurt, so I think it was just a warning).
Is there any way I can train her to like being handled? We need to be able to pick her up so we can cut her nails. I sort of assumed when I got a rabbit that they were lap animals, so please correct me if I’m wrong.
Anyways, to summarize, if there is a way to train my bunny to like being handled, that would be awesome and please let me know
        Thanks for your help!

Most bunnies don’t like to be picked up. Some bunnies like to cuddle on your lap but most don’t. If you need to pick up your bunny to trim their nails I would recommend dropping a towel on which causes them to freeze for a bit. Then pick her up and wrap her in the towel so her legs are out but she can’t kick. This technique is called a bunny burrito.

Hi! You’re right that it is normal for buns to not like being picked up. When I need to pick Luna up, I have her go in her carrier first (I lead her in the carrier with pellets). Once she is in there, I put the carrier on a table to do her nails.

Theres nothing you can do to train rabbits to enjoy it, they either do or they dont. A large majority do not. You can train rabbits to accept it, but that doesnt mean they will like it, which seems to be where you are now To train short term acceptance of picking up, start small. Sit on the floor, lift her, set her down. So this about once a day until she stops fighting back. Then kneel, and do the same process. Then stand, same process. Try not to train handling for more than about five minutes at a time/per day to reduce chances of her fighting back or hurting herself

The bunny who enjoys being picked up is the exception to the rule. Panda and Fernando always kick when I have to pick them up, though they settle down fast once I’ve gotten a secure grip on them – but then they start kicking again when they sense I’m going to put them back down again. I personally prefer to always be kneeling or sitting when it’s necessary to pick them up (usually to get them into their carrier) so that, among other things, they don’t have far to drop if they squirm out of my grasp or I drop them, to minimize the risk of their getting hurt.

Rabbits are prey animals so when they are getting picked up it is a natural instinct to feel like they are being doomed. Mr Buns HATES being picked up and he will grunt and kick and buck to tell me he is not a happy camper so I try to avoid carrying him anywhere(to at least avoid holes in my clothes and dirty looks later) If you can use a basket to help carry her where you want to go that would be a lot easier on both of you just make sure you place one hand on your bunny to make sure she cannot jump out. I have a 14 week old lop who has no problem being picked up but gets all squirrely when it comes to being put down which can be just as dangerous…. rabbits are just better floor creatures and prefer “four on the floor”

It’s perfectly normal! Rabbits hate the feeling of being picked up because that’s what a prediter would do if the rabbit is being hunted. In my experience only very docile and tame rabbits won’t mind being picked up.
