My rabbit hasn’t eaten anything today, drank nothing, and has been huddled in a ball in the corner. He hasn’t touched his hay in the past week so I took him to the vet yesterday to see if things were okay. She said that his stomach felt okay when she touched it. Tonight, however, things have gotten so much worse. When we went to the vet yesterday he was still eating his pellets and veggies fine and drinking normally. But today nothing has been touched. Then about two hours ago he had diarrhea…well not actual diarrhea…but super liquid, squishy, almost toothpaste consistency poop and he just sat in it and didn’t move. I cleaned him up the best I could. Now he’s just huddled in the corner. I heard him grind his teeth a few times. I spoke to my vet but there’s no emergency vets available to take a look at him and his normal vet won’t be able to see him until after 4 tomorrow (it’s about 8 pm now). I’m fairly certain he’s suffering from gi statis. I;m very stressed and upset so I’ve been crying a lot and panicking. He’s only a year old and I couldn’t bare to lose him just yet. I guess I’m just asking for reassurance and help on things I can do for him to alleviate the pain. I also would like some bunny expert advice on if it is GI Statis do you think he can make it until 4 tomorrow for the vet. It’s really frustrating to have limited vets available who see rabbits in my area. I know I won’t be sleeping tonight and I’m so scared he won’t make it until tomorrow. He’s my first rabbit so I’m not super experienced on this sort of thing. I want to make sure that I’m doing everything I can. Any tips to help him or tips on getting him to just drink water?? Thanks in advance.
Oh my goodness, is your vet rabbit savvy? Did they prescribe any treatments? Did they have any ideas of why he was off his hay?
Since it has been a while of him not eating hay and he hasn’t eaten today, he should be seen as soon as possible. I would really push your vet to see him first thing in the morning, as it any rapid change in a bunny (coupled with not eating for more than 12 hours) gets into emergency territory. I understand not having ER vets that see bunnies (I’m in that boat too), it sucks.
You might still call some ER vets and see if they would at least give fluids and pain meds, which can stabilize a sick bunny.
It could be a couple of things…. the decline with not eating hay could indicate a dental issue, that maybe led to stasis/gas, but it’s hard to know. Sometimes GI issues start with not wanting hay. Have there been any changes in his diet?
Super mushy poop is better than no poop. That makes me think he could have coccidia, which is a parasitic infection.
Right now, you can give him tummy rubs ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbyC6CWbm5M), give simethicone (which can help with gas), and offer some critical care, pellet mash, or canned pumpkin (or all of the above). You can also massage along his spine to stimulate his GI tract. Try to keep him eating. Cilantro and fragrant herbs can help.
Also keep him warm. When rabbits are in pain their temperature can fluctuate wildly, and they can get hypothermia. You can hold him in your lap, or offer a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel for him to cuddle with, just be sure he can move away from it if he gets too warm. Can you take his temperature? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZd10Hk0maA)
Since he did have some poops, I would guess he does not have a blockage, so if you can, I would try syringe feeding him. Keep in mind some people don’t like to syringe feed without first consulting the vet, but since you were just seen, and he pooped, that’s what I would personally do.

Agree with DanaNM. Also, if he starts to eat his veggies again, keep drenching them in water to help him stay hydrated. If you are unable to take his temperature, you can feel his ears to see if they are cold (if so he needs to warm up).
Are there any rabbit vets aside from yours that you can call? Maybe one of them could see him right away? Or as DanaNM suggested, hopefully a dog/cat ER can give him sub-q’s.
I suggest maybe giving him some baby gas drops and tummy massage(youtube has great instructional videos) teeth grinding indicates great discomfort. If you can and have a syringe you can force a bit of water into him just to keep him hydrated. Mr Buns had an episode this morning, I walked in and he was also huddled and looking uncomfortable and wouldnt take his treats. I gave him the lowest dosage of Simethicone(0.3 mls) and I had a gut motility drug- you should ask your vets to give you to always have on hand as this stuff works like a charm. about 10 minutes later he he has a squishy poop to flush out whatever it was that got backed up in his system and went back to normal eating and drinking. You could also offer some baby food right out of the jar. Good luck!
How is your bunny doing today? Were you able to get him into the vet?

Thank you so much! It was a rough night but he made it to morning. It didn’t help that a massive snow storm hit and knocked out the power and heat all night. It couldn’t have been worse timing. He’s at the vet now. They said the next twenty four hours will be critical. It’s not looking that great at the moment but at least I can rest knowing that he’s well taken care of with proper medicine, heat, liquids, and that they’re doing everything they can. Any positive vibes sent out into the universe for my little Frankie would be very much appreciated. Thank you again, guys. Here’s to hoping he can make it through another night.
Glad your little guy was able to get meds
