If anyone saw my previous thread (posted earlier today), you know I am now caring for a bun who was abandoned at my job (a pet store). He is 5-6 months old and a charlie marked lionhead. I took him home on Sunday night and have been noticing that his poops seem very small and sometimes mishapen. A worker for the local rabbit rescue agreed but said it could be that his previous owners, who abandoned him, maybe weren’t feeding him hay or just not feeding him correctly in general and this could be the cause for the odd poops, and it should get more consistently shaped and bigger over the next few days as he adjusts to his new diet. I am attaching a pic of some poops, all produced within a minute or two so you guys can see how small they are and how mishapen some are. He has had one double poop as well but he ate it before I could take a pic. I am concerned abouf megacolon considering his pattern. Let me know what you think!

[Something went wrong with the attachment, I’ll reup the pic]

Is he eating and drinking consistenly on his own right now? It can be he’s just adjusting to his new diet and needs some time to calibrate his intestinal flora and to process the new food, especially if he has been underfed before coming to you.

When is he due for a vet checkup? If he is young it could be worth to exam his poop for coccidia, that may affect his ability to process the nutrients – and so also his “output”.

Hi! Yes, he is a great eater/drinker. The best vet who sees rabbits in my area doesn’t have an available bun appt til the 28th. If it doesn’t get better in the next few days as he adapts to eating right, I will try to get an appt with another vet. I just really want him to see the best one, who was recommended by my local rabbit rescue.

Thank you for fixing the picture, Muchelle!

I think it’s likely that he hasn’t been eating as much crude fiber as he should, because that makes poop small and dark and often mishapen. If you give him hay and he eats it, this is likely to correct itself within the next couple of weeks. At first the tummy can have a little bit of trouble processing the hay if he’s not had hay before, but after some time, the gut bacteria have adjusted to the new diet and he’ll be able to make energy out of cellulose just like he should. But until then, he should still get a small amount of pellets every day.

Thank you for taking him in =)
