› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Spaying Daisy the bunny HELP!
Hello everyone. I am a new bunny owner for my amazing 4 month old Daisy. I am also a college student studying to become an elementary teacher with a minor in ASL (American Sign Language). I cannot afford on my own to pay for Daisy’s surgery which is a total of about $400 for her to be spayed and have a check up at the vet… ($325 to be spayed $75) to have a full check up by a vet. Due to getting a bunny, I got a job to help pay for this, but it is not making nearly enough money. I have created a gofundme account to help raise money for Daisy to get spayed due to my knowledge of how important it is. Please help me by donating some money to the gofundme page to help Daisy get spayed and have her first check up with a vet. I would appreciate this so much!!! I don’t know what else to do, and I know I won’t be able to come up with this cash in time and support myself as well. I’ve been a good owner towards Daisy, she has all her other necessities met, food pellets, water, hay, toys, huts, litter boxes. I just really could use support on her being spayed. I’ve attatched the gofundme page below if any of you are willing to help me out here. Thank you so much for taking your time to read this

It’s against forum rules to solicit money:
Unless you are an official rabbit rescue, do not ask directly or indirectly for funding or financial help of any kind.
Everybody has to pay to spay and neuter their pets. She doesn’t HAVE to be neutered at 6 months old, any time in the first year would be absolutely fine. You could save $50 a month for 8 months, and still have her spayed before she was a year old.
Hi daisy406. Sorry I am not able to donate as I am trying to get enough money to spay my bunnies. I live in a regular city but there are some people nearby who have land. We decided to go to a vet more out there. Vets near us said $400 per bunny. The vet out there is only $165. I don’t know if there is anything like that where you live though. Good luck on raising the money
The ASPCA does low cost spay programs. You could look into those. Unfortunately, many people here will not be able to help you, as bunnies can be a drain on the wallet when they are sick and need vet visits, especially if there are two or three bunnies in a household.
I appreciate that spays can be expensive and that you’re trying to raise the funds but what are your plans if Daisy ever needs vet treatment? Veterinary care for rabbits can be verrry costly. Buttercup’s most recent (May 2017) emergency vet visit came to around £400. She needed an emergency visit a week before that too which was a couple of hundred pounds.
If she needs an emergency vet care at that point i’m hoping to have much more money in my account due to working more. But at the moment I’ve just started and don’t have good hours in.
I saw this link on the Illinois House Rabbit Society website, for low cost spay and neuter for rabbits.
They charge $100 for a rabbit spay.
Vet care for any animal will be expensive, for rabbits even more so since they are considered exotics. So you always have to be prepared to have the money for vet bills.
Hi! You can also check with your vet to see if they accept CareCredit or will work with you on some sort of payment plan
.
I have to get my new boy bunny neutered and my new girl spayed, which will cost me about $800 (Canadian) for both of them with in the next few months… JUST found out, after we got the bunnies, that my hubby got laid off of work, so I know sometimes life can happen.
I’m not sure if what I am doing to get this figured out myself too (as being an adult is expensive) would be of any help to you, but just in case:
1.) I have a “Bunny” Jar on my desk. Anytime I want to buy a coffee, grab take out… you get the idea – money goes in the jar instead and I hit the fridge.
2.) Going out with friends – I had plans to go out to dinner and out for drinks with a friend for tomorrow. I have told her I now can’t afford to and we are splitting a bottle (or two hehe) of wine and making dinner at her house with ingredients we both had in the fridge and then are just staying in and watching a chick flick. Understanding friends = Extra money for the jar
3.) Myself and my husband have asked our parents to give us the cash for whatever our future birthday gift value for this year would be instead to go towards this – Yes it will suck half a year later when we don’t have gifts to open, but this alone will pay for one of them.
4.) We have found a wonderful exotic vet that will take a payment plan if any emergency comes up. (We are still trying to pay for this all up front, but its good to find a place that will work with you for an unexpected illness
5.) This wont help you now, but for the future – Once we got back on our feet – work wise – I have looked into the cost of animal pet insurance. Did some research and found (for my area) the coverage is not all that great for exotics – so I am going to take the amount I would have paid monthly for that and put it into an “oh frig” account for future emergencies and vet costs as well.
If all else fails we will put it off by a few more months.
Good luck! Sending lots of positive vibes your way!
Hi daisy406
As mentioned, asking for donations is against our forum rules, so I have had to edited out the link in your post. Since Daisy is still so young, there will be plenty of time to continue to save toward her spay. Our members here have given really great advice and suggestions to help toward this goal and her future care.
Already mentioned is care credit, which you can find out about here: http://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/
For insurance, check out Nationwide and PetAssure.
The vet that does the rabbit ops for the clinic Tobyluv mentioned is Dr Susan Brown. This name rings a bell. I think she has written articles for the House Rabbit Society. Reading the info on the fvawl page, she sounds thoroughly experienced with rabbit spays. ![]()
@Nutmeg, so sorry to hear about the situation with your husbands job. I hope he’s not out of work too long. Really love the ideas you’ve shared!
