Hi all! I could really use some input about what to do for my bunnies current situation.

I have 3 buns: a male lionhead, Frodo, an angora/lionhead doe, Dynamite, and a black and white dutch, Panda. They range in age from 1-2 years old.

A couple nights ago I noticed Panda wasn’t eating and was hunched down like she was in pain. By the next morning she still hadn’t eaten so I took her to her vet and found out she had bladder sludge, without bladder stones or any real obstructions. She’s home now, on oral medications for gas and pain, and I’m having to feed her Oxbow Critical Care with a syringe until she decides to start eating on her own again.

This is a very bad time to run out of her food. She still has plenty of hay (her main food during her recovery) but my other buns still have their diet supplemented with Palouse pellets. When I was running low, I went to my local co-op to get their usual 20 lb bag of food. I was told they were out and would have a delivery next week. I thought, okay–they have enough food for a week. But I went back today and they’re still out! I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel and the store has no idea when they’re getting more in. I’ve been making calls to every pet store around and no one else carries it.

I know rabbits need to gradually transition to a new food over weeks, but I don’t have that option. Please, does anyone have any advice for how to deal with this problem?

I had a similar problem. I put the remaining food i had in a baggie. Every day i put a scoop of new food in the baggie and mix it up. I do this everyday until the baggie is just the new food. I add about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of new food daily depending on how much is leftover. Hope this helps

Would it be worth checking sites like Craiglist? In the hopes someone is selling a bag their rabbits didn’t care for?

Critical care is a different feed anyway, so you could continue her on that until you get hold of the pellets again. You may need to review if pellets contributed to her bladder sludge and look into an alternative, if that is the case.

Did the vet think some subcutaneous fluids would help flush out her bladder? A vet can show you how to express the bladder also, to help move the sludge out.
