        Hello,

I have an 8 year old mini lop buck that was never neutered. One of his testicles is HUGE I brought him to the vet and they gave him 10 days of baytril and metacam.. they think he would need a neuter but they couldn’t perform the surgery because of the size of his testicle. They said we could go to VCA to do the surgery or try the antibiotics and see if it helps. They were concerned about his age and weren’t very sure if he would make it through surgery. After a few days of antibiotics his testicle has gotten a tiny bit smaller but not by much. He is still eating and drinking .. has anyone experienced this? I don’t want to force him to suffer I just want to give him a chance. Any suggestions? I love him so much

I suppose they could do further diagnostics to find out what’s causing this. Ultrasound or MRI maybe? But if it’s a tumor or abscess, it would likely need surgery anyway. I know having an older bunny have surgery can be worrisome, but some pre-anaesthetic bloodwork would give a better idea of how he would do.

My Bombur had this problem, although he was around a year old. He almost had to go in for an emergency neuter; thankfully antibiotics helped him.

Has he gotten a full blood test done yet? A full blood test will let the vet know if he is having any organ troubles causing this. When you touch the testicle, is it warm? Is it very red?

I have read about elderly buns having emergency neuters for testicular cancer. Testicular cancer used to be very rare in rabbits, but it’s getting more common, simply because rabbits live longer nowadays, and testicular cancer is a disease of the elderly in rabbits. It as a rule grows slowly. Does he seem to be in bad shape otherwise? A blood panel can give clues as to whether a bun will tolerate full anesthesia, I think they look primarily at liver function. It’s no guarantee though, but there never are any guarantees when it comes to medical procedures.

(This doesn’t absolutely have to be cancer, but a swollen testicle is a classic sign.)
