My bunny has been acting unusual for the last several days. She isn’t as energetic and doesn’t bounce about. She has free reign of my room, and is let out to roam around the living room every day. For the last couple days, she hasn’t shown any interest in exploring and kicking her heels like she typically does. She just sits in the same place in my bedroom on her blanket. She usually loves cuddles and eagerly licks me and runs circles around me whenever I come in the room, but now she’s disinterested and sad looking. I’ve been keeping a close eye on her, and she’s still eating and drinking, and her droppings look normal. She doesn’t eat with as much enthusiasm as she typically does. She looks healthy in every way, but she seems sad. She’s also been really into nesting lately. She’s been moving blankets and digging in them much more recently. She’s my only bunny, and I’m concerned she’s lonely. Does anyone know if the spring time could be affecting her? Should I get her a companion?

Is your female spayed? If not, she could be going through a false pregnancy, where a doe acts as if she is pregnant and nests and stuff and actually pulls out her own fur too sometimes to put in the nest for the whole pregnancy time period and then never actually has babies. It seems that’s what’s happening. Sitting in one place, nesting a lot, but still having everything else as normal. How old is she? I think it’s the hormones that are probably affecting her. Are you thinking of getting her spayed? It’s really best if you do decide to do that. They have a sixty percent chance of uterine cancer by age three when they aren’t spayed, and later when they get that they have to get spayed anyways, and it costs even more at that point. Bunnies typically live fine on their own, but live best in pairs. It’s like she’ll live a great life without a friend, but a better one if she does get one. But you’ll have to spay/neuter the other rabbit and her if you want two. If you don’t want a bunch of babies running around.

When you say nesting, are you referring just to her digging up the blankets? If so, that’s a totally normal behaviour. Lots of bunnies love to dig at blankets

It’s good that she’s eating and pooping. Would you say she’s lethargic or just lazing around? So, if you were to call her would she come running or is she hesitant to move? If she still moves about when encouraged, it could be that she’s just having a few lazy days. The change in weather could be the cause but it might just be that she needs some rest.

Getting her a companion would be wonderful! But, read up on bonding beforehand as it can be quite a lengthy process.

She ran around my feet this morning as usual, so I hope she’s feeling a little better. This morning and last night she kept grunting and slapping her foot on the ground. She enjoys moving her blankets around and digging on them, but recently she’s started doing it much more. She either lays down or digs her blankets. She won’t come to me when I call her anymore and doesn’t enjoy being petted like she usually does. She typically is eager to go exploring and jumps and twists in the air, but now she refuses to leave her room. She seems beyond lazy. Thanks for all of your advice! I’m going to get her spayed, and I’m looking into getting a bunny friend for her.

You might want to tell a vet about this. It sounds a little concerning that she is beyond lazy. That sounds a little like lethargic to me. And with the aggressive behavior, it seems like she’s getting a little more hormonal. It’s good that you are getting her spayed though! Just watch over her dietry and litter habits. If there is decrease in appetite and poops, then something’s up.

It does sound like she is either going through false pregnancy or is feeling sick. I would recommend going to a vet just in case.
