I have a male bunny, Sammy, who is a few months old. Recently, he’s only been pooping in his litter box half the time. I use horse stall pellets for his litter, and recently it looks like the company that makes the pellets changed them up a bit, but they only seem darker in color. Sammy isn’t neutered, and I can’t afford to do so. He’s always been 99% potty trained, with maybe a drop or two (most likely kicked out by his feet) but now it’s half the time his poops are around his cage and it’s pretty frustrating. Sometimes it’s scattered and other times it’s in a pile. He knows it was wrong of him to do because if I walk over and look in, he immediately runs over and tries to hide it by sitting on it. I’m just not sure what to do. I would understand if this had been going on the whole time, I would just assume it to be because he isn’t neutered, but it’s a recent start up and it’s pretty frustrating. I got him a new litter box thinking that would help, it’s a bit bigger with higher sides, but it hasn’t changed a thing.

Sorry, that did make me laugh. Rabbits!

How old is Sammy? How long have you had him now? Im just wondering if this is age related or if seasonal with the upper hemisphere coming into Spring now. Rabbits can become more hormonal during that time and some owners may see some changing behaviours.

I suppose you could experiment with some other litters and see if that is the culpri. You might be able to find a smallish bag of Feline Pine in the supermarket to test the theory. Then, if his habits improve, look for horse stall pellets that you know will be pine or other lighter wood.

Could he have outgrown the size of the litterbox perhaps?
Or is he getting to hay at a different spot to usual?

I got him in May when he was just a few weeks old, so he’s almost a year now. I’ve never heard of that before but I wouldn’t doubt it as a possibility. I added in a second litter box so hopefully that helps as well. It’s hard to put the second one in a spot where he frequently poops because it seems to be in a bunch of different places, but I tried my best.

I think I’m going to change his litter. I’ve noticed this one is more powdery/sawdusty. And I’ve also noticed him sneezing more than he ever has. Any suggestions on litter? I used to use care fresh when I first got him, but it’s not that great at absorption and I was changing his litter every other day. Especially at the price they charge it was getting way too expensive.
