As many of you know, Bombur is being treated with 28 days of Oxibendazole for EC flare up. I was told to bring him in after 14 days of treatment, and again at the end to test his white blood cell levels, as these can drop during treatment. There were no available appointments for him to be tested this first time around, so they scheduled only the final one for March 10th. How important is this in-between appointment that they weren’t able to get me in for? The pharmacist seemed really concerned about the medicine itself when I picked up his second round, and the vet seemed really adamant he come in twice. Is there anything I should be watching for?

He hasn’t had any incontinence in 3-4 days. He’s been a little sluggish/tired, but I can’t tell if that’s because he’s molting again. He’s also eating, drinking, and pooping normally. Should I be overly concerned?

It is the risk of bone marrow suppression they are concerned about, I think. That’s why a CBC is recommended on day 14 and day 28 of treatment.

Do you know of any signs to look for? Like I said, he seems fine except for being a bit tired, but I do know buns can go downhill quickly.

I’m in a bit of a hurry right now, so this is the only reasonably clear thing I can find, but it’s about humans. You need to test for it I think. https://www.diagnose-me.com/symptoms-of/bone-marrow-suppression.php

Buns have red & white bloodcells and platelets just like humans, so I’d expect it to be very much alike.

Thanks Bam! I’ll keep monitoring him, and if I notice anything super out of the ordinary I’ll see if they can give him a quick check.

From what I can find there is anecdotal evidence of bone marrow suppression from oxybendazole, meaning there aren’t any scientific studies to refer to. That of course also means it’s not known how common bone marrow suppression is, or if it’s rare or very rare. It’s not used as a dewormer in cats and dogs and horses for the prolonged period of time that’s needed for e cuniculi. Normally dogs and cats and horses receive the drug for 1-3 days, so my guess it’s not really clear how big the risk actually is.
