Hi, my bunny Howard tends to close or partially close his left eye every now and then. He’s been doing that since I got him from his breeder yesterday. His breeder is very reputable so I doubt that this problem is due to irresponsibility on the breeder’s part. It also seems pink around the rim so I’m not sure if he has an eye infection. (See image) It’s not swollen and does not have any discharge. At first, I thought he was sensitive to light, but he also closes his eye at night as well. We took him back to his breeder to check and the breeder says that he doesn’t think anything is wrong since Howard doesn’t have any discharge or swelling around the eye area. We were advised to wait a week to see how he is but I don’t feel comfortable waiting so long as I’m afraid his condition might worsen.

He also seems to be whistling softly through his nose when I pet him. I read that this is usually not a problem if he is eating normally, which he is, but I also read that eye issues that are left untreated can result in respiratory issues. I’m really hoping Howard is fine and doesn’t have any problems. Howard is my second bunny and my previous one never had any such problems. Any help would be very much appreciated.

          Is he a baby?

When I got my baby lionhead, the rims of his eyes looked a bit pink, and also had some tiny white flakes. The vet said that it was pretty common in baby bunnies (something to do with their eyelashes growing I think??), and she preferred to not treat it, since it generally resolves by itself. Now he’s fully grown, it does flare up occasionally and we have eye drops that make a pretty immediate difference.

I can’t see any flakiness in your photos, but it is unusual that he’s holding it partially closed. To be honest, I would always take a new rabbit for a vet check up anyway, as it’s good to have them weighed, teeth checked, nail clipped, and a chance to talk about any problems like this. Generally a new pet check up is cheap (or even free, since they want to keep your future business), so I think it’s worth checking.

Thanks for replying! Howard is 5 months old. His teeth were just checked a few days ago – perfectly healthy, and his nails were trimmed too. We’re thinking he might have some congenital issues but we’re not sure, so we’ll be taking him to the vet soon.
