Hello everyone. My bunny has conjunctivitis and was put on ofloxacin for it as well as Baytril for snuffles. He was in generally good spirits, and his eye was clearing up.

Last night I was battling the flu and asked my husband to give our bunny his eye drops. Fast forward to this morning and I asked him to give bunny his eye drops and realized that my husband was not using the ofloxacin but using GSE (grapefruit seed extract oil) by mistake.

I immediately flushed my bunny’s eye with warm water for almost 10 minutes but his eye is swollen shut, inflamed and looks like the inside upper lid has blisters. He hopped under my bed after and I’ve noticed his eye is still red and swollen and he is tilting his head in the direction of his bad eye. My vet isn’t available until tomorrow. Advice on what I can do?

I feel absolutely horrible, as does my husband. I don’t know how to help soothe my bunny’s eye.

He is a 5 lb neutered male age 6. Has had eye issues for almost 2 years on and off.

Thanks in advance for any help.

A fairly unharmful way to soothe the tissue is to prepare a lukewarm chamomile, wet a gauze in it and gently keep it over the sore eye (or rub it over it if he’s not cohoperating). Consider calling an emergency vet at least for a telephonic consultation, though.

Update: Deos eye got much worse throughout the day yesterday and we rushed him to his vet this morning. He has an ulcer from the Grapefruit Seed oil. It’s really bad. He was put on metacam for swelling and pain, artificial tears to help irritation and he has to have his ofloxacin every 2 hours as well as his Baytril every 12 hours for snuffles. If he isn’t better by Friday he will have to have his eye removed. I hope his system can handle everything that is being thrown at him.

I’m so sorry this accident happened. I hope Deo’s eye will heal. If it doesn’t and he has to have his eye removed, he can still have a very good life. We have had examples of that here.
