        Hello everyone,

So basically, my rabbit is about 4 years old – she’s a lion head/dwarf. She has her own room so she is potty trained and gets Timothy hay and pellets with fresh veggies everyday. I usually spend time with her in the evening when she’s ready to Binky and as we like to say “show us her hops” but today while I was cleaning her room which was earlier in the day (bunny chill time) she seemed lethargic and when I pet her she seemed skinny (I can feel her ribs) she was stretched out which is usually not the way I pet her I usually pet her when she’s in more a loaf position? Feeling her ribs sent us into a frenzy and we got so worried I even called the groomer (she just had her nails done to ask them if they thought she was skinny) but now I just spent time with her like normal and she seems fine. Full Binky mode and when she sits normal no ribs. Is my bunny too skinny if I feel her ribs in a laying down position? She’s been eating and pooping fine.

Side note to clarify our life style: I work during the morning hours which is why I miss bunny chill time and am off on weekends which is cleaning time. She is a happy bunny and enjoys pets but I don’t pick her up (which I know makes me maybe a bad bunny person) but she hates being picked up so much and she’s happier when love is on her terms. My bunny rules me.

Well, buns hate to be picked up so you’re def a very bunny person

A bun of normal weight should generally have and armonic figure (round belly that doesn’t stick too much on the sides or below) and the ribs should be easily felt under a thick layer of skin/coat. To get rid of any doubts you can weight her, either directly on a kitchen scale with a large dish or by weighting her into her carrier and then subtracting the weight of the carrier

It can be tricky because buns will look and feel different depending on the position they’re in, as you said. If in doubt, I’d get her weighed at the vets. My vets have free weigh ins with the vet nurses. I took Peanut in because I thought he was too skinny (he’s much smaller than Buttercup) Turns out he was perfect weight with good muscle mass. It definitely eased my mind

It’s not unusual for young growing bunnies to be a little lanky too.
