I plan on adopting a big adorable bunny this weekend (Yay!) One problem is he’s currently at a rescue 3 1/2 hours away.

Any advice for a semi-long ride like this with a new bunny? Should I bring hay? Water? Pellets?

I have a hard shell and a ‘soft carrier’, the soft carrier is bigger but I’d hate for him to chew out.

Are there ways to make a car ride less stressful for the poor guy?

I currently have 2 dwarf rabbits whom I’d love to bond him with. I’d really like for them to have a playdate beforehand but is that really worth a 7 hour (round trip) of stress on my little guys? I’d rather leave them home honestly. But if I really should bring them and it’s really important for bonding, any advice for realllllyyy long car trips with rabbits?

First of all, congrats on your adoption <3

Secondly, a 3 hour car drive is pretty manageable. The bun won’t eat or drink while on the move, so I’d make sure he’s been fed before you take him away and then I’d take a good 30 mins stop at about half of the ride, so that he can drink, eat and relax a bit. You can use the hard carrier and line it with one of those absorbing sheets for puppies topped with plenty of hay, so he can safely pee without flooding the carrier and maybe have a snack if he feels like it.

I’d keep the other two home, 7 hours is a long time to be cooped up in a carrier, especially if they’re not used to it. You’ll have to introduce the new one properly anyways, so why rushing?

            thanks!

I’m probably just stressing about this too much .  And thanks for the advice, it’s all very helpful!

My bun comes with me on a 6 hours trip down to holiday house every year and he survives every time Yeah, it’s stressful but with some stops and a good temperature in the car they can totally do it. Before he realized that 90% of times car = vet he even liked it ahaha

My two bunnies have traveled my 3 hour drive between my place and parents a few times. I always stop half way and let them relax a little. I also have them in a carrier lined with a towel in case they pee, buckled up in my passengers seat and will pet them at stop lights and such which seems to calm them. This also might seem crazy, but I swear just talking to them helps too!!

                Good luck!

I leave tonight and get him tomorrow morning, can’t wait!  Thanks for the help both of you. The idea of a little trip is little less stressful seeing how common it is

I’ve never had much issue with mine not enjoying the ride, they prefer cardboard to anything else and thus get a cardboard three-walled abode inside of their carriers when they want one. As long as the ride isn’t too long, it should be fine. If they eat after the ride you should be A-okay to do trips regardless.
