hello my lop has a hip deformity that causes her to not be able to bend her hind legs and she drags her butt everywhere,i have tried shredded paper litter and most every litter and it doesn’t absorb enough so she gets urine sculd and needs a bath every week along with daily litter changes.i recently switched to play sand it it works perfect,no more baths no more urine sculd the only issue is they kick some sand into there food dish since they eat in the giant liter box.im just worried this will cause dental problems or worse.should I remove the food dish from litter box or will this just create pee accidents o9n the floor?i assume in the wild they get dirt and sand in there food but I want to here it from you that’s there ok with sand litter.the other litter that works is cat litter but I read that thyey will eat this and cause blockage in intestines.with sand I can go up to 3 days max without changing litter plus I can reuse the sand by bleach soap and water so its cheap.please let me know what you think.

It’s great that you so actively tried different litters to find the best one. Although it would not work as well with sand litter (too small), have you ever tried a litter screen for more pelleted/granule litters? The urine will fall through the screen and soak in the litter, but there’s minimal contact with the rabbit’s behind, with exception of the initial pee itself because it sits on the screen temporarily as it drains through the holes.

I can’t comment on sand ingestion because I have no experience, but I know that some owners make dig boxes out of sand, so I reckon minor consumption is not bad as long as she’s drinking water to pass it all through. I can’t imagine sand would cause dental issues unless a tooth was already fractured/split and sand entered it and irritated/infected it. I also cannot comment on the safety of re-using it (bleach and water) unfortunately. Though I personally am a fan of re-using litter if possible and sanitary. There’s a lot of trash disposal with rabbit ownership, so whatever can be done to minimize it, I’m game.

Is everything food-related in the litter box pushed to one side? I do this with Wick so he doesn’t poop/pee on his hay and in his pellet dish when I put it in there.
